The Datai Langkawi celebrates its 30th anniversary in style

Refining the Malaysian batik tradition into an exclusive yet timeless everyday look that everyone can wear, Kapten Batik was launched in 2017 with its custom-ordered fabrics being mostly yarned in India and Indonesia. To commemorate The Datai Langkawi’s anniversary, Kapten Batik will be curating a special collection drawing inspiration from the patterns and colours found at the enchanting rainforest resort.

The brand will launch this capsule collection on December 8 with a fashion show, exclusively for guests of The Datai Langkawi. Pieces from the collection will be available for purchase at the resort’s creative space, The Atelier, for a month starting from December 1, 2023 to January 2, 2024.

Guests of The Datai Langkawi can look forward to Kapten Batik’s masterclasses in batik creation, which will be held at the resort’s Beach Club from December 9 to 11, where they will be able to create their own batik masterpiece and bring it home.

Textile and installation artist Kam Woei Yann founded Yann Indigo, a series of Shibori-themed handicraft workshops. From December 12 to 14, resort guests can learn the Art of Shibori and Natural Indigo Dye, starting with the Basics of Shibori (Day 1), Dyeing Shibori on Scarves (Day 2), and Dyeing Shibori on Kimonos (Day 3).

Tanoti Crafts was founded to elevate women weavers and artisans of Sarawak (one of the states of Eastern Malaysia) while preserving traditional Sarawakian crafts for future generations. The organisation will launch its capsule collection at The Datai with a fashion show on December 13, showcasing some of its best local pieces. Expect to see artfully created clothing by The Datai x Tanoti Crafts in limited pieces for a limited time.

The gala event on December 16 will feature the return of Michel and Sébastien Bras, both holders of a combined five Michelin stars at Bras and Le Suquet in Laguiole, France, who previously honoured the grand re-opening of The Datai Langkawi after its refurbishment in 2017/2018 with an exclusive dinner for guests. The top chefs will prepare a seven-course dinner and curate a special menu using local ingredients found at the resort’s Permaculture Garden and its surrounding areas.

Guests will be kept entertained throughout the seven-course dinner with a fundraising auction and special live performances. Expect to see one-of-a-kind items during the live auction sponsored by partners like Malaysian centenarian pewter brand Royal Selangor, wildlife photographer Peter Ong, award-winning photojournalist SC Shekar, and many more. The auction will see all proceeds going to programmes under The Datai Pledge—a private trust dedicated to improving the well-being of the environment, wildlife and local community of Langkawi.

Guests will also be serenaded by Malaysian celebrities, including songstress Jaclyn Victor, pianist Mei Lin, and have the chance to laugh out loud along with stand-up comedian Harith Iskander, with Daphne Iking leading guests through the evening as the master of ceremonies.
