Tatler stayed at the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers recently, after the Kowloon harbourfront hotel underwent a major refurbishment to modernise its experiences
When the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers first opened in Kowloon in 1974, it was one of the few hotels that stood tall against the skyline of the Victoria Harbour. 50 years later, the hotel’s surroundings are now packed with the city’s leading entertainment attractions such as the K11 Musea shopping mall. Thanks to the hotel’s prime location in the heart of the city’s business and shopping districts, and its close proximity to both the MTR and the High-speed Rail, it is positioned to become an accommodation of choice for business travellers.
To mark its 50th anniversary, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts’ Kowloon property underwent a major refurbishment to modernise its signature experiences for a new generation of jetsetters—and Tatler was invited to review these experiences.

As I entered, it was clear that the hotel lobby has successfully maintained the grandeur of “old Hong Kong”. My visit coincided with the festive season, which meant that the Christmas decorations in the lobby—such as the lush Christmas garlands wrapped around the main staircase—made things look even more inviting. The check-in process itself was smooth and seamless, and I was shown up to my room in no more than five minutes.
Room with a view
The rooms are where one feels the touch of modernity immediately upon entering. Sleek, crisp and spacious—with an expansive harbour view—there’s a stark contrast with the old burgundy hues and striped carpets of the pre-refurbishment days, which many Hongkongers might associate with their former days of quarantine.
The effect of the almost-two-year-long renovation can be felt in each nook and corner of the room, from the brand-new light wooden interiors to the ambient lighting to the chic furnishings.

In line with the theme of modernity, integrated power ports and helpful charging equipment is included in each room, with layered lighting that greets you with a warm and welcoming feel. The bathrooms feature a walk-in shower design with both rainfall showerhead and a built-in bath for those, who like me, prefer a longer pampering soak.
The best of the original Sheraton amenities haven’t gone anywhere though. The luxurious Sheraton “Sleep Experience” platform beds—custom-made for the hotel—feather-down pillows and black-out curtains delivered a full eight-hour sleep, and I woke up all rested and recharged.
Wine and dine
Among the award-winning restaurants scattered throughout the hotel, Unkai Japanese Cuisine is located on the third floor and is easy to find, but once you’re inside, the restaurant feels like a maze. Divided into six main dining areas that spiral outwards—the open teppan, private teppan room, sushi and sake bar, three private rooms, main dining area and tatami room, each is separated by raw materials like sandstone, bamboo and marble, creating a distinctively Japanese aesthetic.
I was given my first (ever) taste of teppanyaki at the open teppan bar, with a nine-course lunch set that included sashimi salmon and snapper, seared and buttery scallops, large tiger prawns and a simple yet impressive fried rice—all prepared with a friendly smile and a side of casual conversation with head chef Suzuki.
Later, once the sun had set and the lights of Victoria Harbour had lit up, I made my way to the 18th floor Sky Lounge for a cocktail or two. Sweet but not too strong, my drink was aptly named after the stunning view outside, and looked just as elegant. With a prime table at the centre of the bar, I was treated to uninterrupted views of K11 Musea, the Hong Kong Space Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art and the bustling harbour front as the lights of Wan Chai’s dramatic skyline glistened across the water.

The most relaxing moment from my stay however, was my morning that followed. After a long and steamy rain shower, I was out and about, taking a stroll along the Avenue of Stars in the early morning sunshine. With the perfect running route, a handful of artisan coffee shops and the iconic K11 Musea all within short walking distance, there couldn’t have been a more serene way to start my morning.
For those looking for a weekend staycation, a convenient location to stay at while in Hong Kong for business, or a comfortable venue for out-of-town family visitors, the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers offers the best of downtown Kowloon, while ensuring your stay is filled with friendly smiles, delicious meals and the right amount of privacy.
