The group checks in at the iconic beachfront property, Sirēya Desaru Coast. Operated by Mandarin Oriental,  this last masterpiece of legendary architect Kerry Hill will be named Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast in 2026 following a graceful transformation. Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast will be the first Mandarin Oriental beach resort in Southeast Asia and the only one with a residential component.

They group is whisked away to Villa One, a luxurious sanctuary where serenity meets style. From spacious living areas to breathtaking views of the sea, it's an ideal setting for reconnection. As actor Hisyam Hamid puts it, “The stunning sea view and beautiful sunrise from the room was unforgettable. It felt like waking up in paradise.”

Mornings begin with a stroll on the lush lawn or breakfast at Ambara—where elevated cuisine meets unique Johor delicacies and ingredients found nowhere else. Nights wind down with karaoke and chocolate lava cake at The Dusky Monkey. “The morning breakfast and the chocolate lava cake over karaoke evenings were definitely highlights,” adds model and actress Thanuja Ananthan.

When it comes to lounging in style, the Ember Beach Club is the group’s go-to. Whether they’re sipping cocktails, swimming or just soaking up sunlit conversations, this is where memories are made. “Hanging at Sirēya’s Ember Beach Club with good company,” says entrepreneur, writer and model, Cheyenne Beh, “was hands-down my favourite leisure activity.”

When it comes to unrivalled beach experiences in Johor, the Ember Beach Club does not disappoint, giving us a luxurious front seat to sand, sky, sea and the wonderful rhythm of nature—you might even spot a monkey or a kingfisher in the distance.

As evening falls, the mood shifts from relaxed to refined. The group splits—some head to The Observatory Bar at Anantara Desaru Coast Resort and Villas for sundowners with panoramic views, while others indulge in a spa session at Sirēya.

They reunite over dinner at Sea.Fire.Salt, where fine seafood and fresh catch rule the table. “The best thing about travelling with friends? Strengthening the bond between friends over our favourite Malaysian food, places, cultures,” says Thanuja. “There is always so much to see and learn—it’s refreshing when we can share these experiences together.”

Sports lovers in the group find their thrills the next day—some hit the padel courts at Sirēya, while others take on the immaculate greens of The Els Club Desaru Coast, one of Malaysia’s top golf courses. From rallies to swings, friendly competition fuels the day’s adventure.

As the sun dips low, the friends regroup at Ember Beach Club for one last golden hour by the sea. Cheyenne captures the magic best: “Sunset by the cabanas at around 6:15pm, when the temperature is perfect and the waves cast smooth, oceanic lyrics. Bonus: if there’s a roaring bonfire in the pit for extra warmth.”

While bidding each other farewell is unarguably the least pleasant part of this beautiful trip, the friends from across Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Jakarta will yet again reunite at the highly anticipated Ombak Festival— which returns this year with a stellar lineup of Southeast Asia’s top musical talents. From nightlife and music festivals to spa visits and sporting prestige, the list of exhilarating things to do in Johor grows longer each day for travellers seeking meaningful memories surrounded by world-class facilities, stunning coastal scenery and luxurious experiences that the state is renowned for.

In Desaru Coast in particular, it’s not just about the destination. It’s about the shared stories, the laughter echoing under palm trees, and the kind of holiday you’ll be talking about for years.
