There are, of course, many places to consider for such a purpose but you may want to put these four at the top of your list, if you haven't already: Thailand's Chiang Mai; Laos' Luang Prabang; Vietnam's Hoi An; and Central Java's Borobudor. Except for Chiang Mai, they are all Unesco World Heritage Sites. Chiang Mai is currently on Unesco's tentative list for this recognition.
And here are the best resorts in the respective locales to lay your head after a full day of discovery.
Amanjiwo, Borobudor
WHAT: One of the most exquisite Aman properties, Amanjiwo doesn't just feature luxuriously appointed suites with views of serene pools and rolling hills, it transports you to ancient times with an architecture that evokes the design of surrounding ancient temples. This is most evident in the rotunda of the main building, looking almost as majestic its inspirations.
WHY: It's quite logically the best abode if you're planning to take in the view of Borobudor at sunrise without having to trek out of its confines. (Trust me, it's a sight you won't want to miss.) Designated as a UNESCO Heritage Site, Borobudor is a magnificent 9th-century Buddhist temple, and if you do plan to be in its embrace, it's only a 25-minute walk away from Amanjiwo. Take advantage of the resort's curated cultural experiences that includes a village tour, a visit to the morning market and a hike up Menoreh Hills.
