On your next trip to Italy, skip the usual destinations and visit instead the island of Sardinia, where the bucolic Cantina Murales awaits you with wine tastings, vinotherapy and immersive, rustic farmstays
It was in the year 2000 that Piero Canopoli, together with his wife Giuliana Dalla Longa and his young daughters Martina, Arianna and Greta, felt a sudden urge to return home. He’d been living away from the warm, sunny island of Sardinia, Italy with his family, and knew the time had come to embrace his roots again.
By 2007, both Canopoli and Dalla Longa had built long careers in the world of wine, with portfolios ranging from consultancy to sommellerie. The years spent getting reacquainted with their homeland had also reawakened an innate passion for the Gallura region—the northeast of Sardinia—leading the couple to discover their true calling: the opening of Cantina Murales, their family winery on the outskirts of Olbia.

Nowadays, Cantina Murales produces a selection of local wines from 25 hectares of vineyards, which the family cultivates with respect for biodiversity and sustainability as well as appreciation for the Sardinian soil.
But beyond the wine production, what makes the locale worth visiting is its immersive wine tourism, run by the three daughters: from wine tastings to vinotherapy spa days and farmstay experiences, there is much to discover in this hidden gem of a destination.

Wine tastings and vineyard tours
As you arrive at Cantina Murales to begin your winery experience, you’ll be welcomed by the skilled and hospitable daughters and accompanied through “scents, colours and flavours”. It all starts with a visit to the small on-site vineyard, followed by a tour of the wine cellar and barrel room indoors.
Stepping into these spaces weaves a narrative, taking you on a journey from the ripening grapes to the ins and outs of a complex fermentation process. This frames the final tastings of the three Murales wines chosen for the occasion, along with a platter of Sardinian cheeses and other local products.
Vinotherapy, the rejuvenating wine spa

If you’re visiting Cantina Murales all the way from Singapore, you can’t miss out on one of the winery’s most unique experiences: vinotherapy, a rejuvenating spa treatment harnessing the therapeutic benefits of wine, inspired by its uses in ancient Greek and Roman society.
The benefits of this spa regimen, according to the winery, are many, ranging from anti-ageing effects to improvements in circulation and tissue regeneration.
The spa menu begins with a stop at the sauna, which is recommended to get the blood circulating, relax the mind and body, and promote perspiration to begin purifying the skin. The second step is exfoliation with dried grape marc, a solid byproduct of winemaking, which eliminates extra dirt and dead skin cells to prepare the skin for the final step.

Following a deeply relaxing massage, the spa culminates in the treatment you’ll probably look forward to the most: a bath in Cannonau—a Sardinian red wine—immersing your whole body in this so-called “elixir of long life”. This immersion is said to hydrate the skin and counteract the effects of free radicals with antioxidant properties, as well as promote toning, boosted by the liquid’s cold temperature.
Once the bath is completed, the experience ends in a relaxation area in the vineyard, where you’ll be treated to wine, a cheese platter, and snacks.

It was the daughters, Martina, Arianna and Greta, who first introduced vinotherapy to Cantina Murales, making it the first destination in Sardinia to offer the experience. As they proudly share, the wine and all other products used for the vinotherapy are recycled from their production cycle, closing the circle by giving the winery’s organic waste a second life.
A rustic farmstay with charm
If you wish to fully immerse yourself in the bucolic charm of the Gallura region, stay a while after your wine tasting and spa treatment and book yourself a rustic stay at the winery.
Choose between various double rooms with a garden view or larger family accommodation with its own veranda and kitchen. The rooms are all en-suite and come with a private entrance and air conditioning, reflecting the rustic appeal of the surroundings while offering modern comforts.

With the vineyard at your doorstep, you’ll also find the winery’s animal ensemble within reach, which includes goats, donkeys, geese, and chickens. Ask the family if you can have a meet and greet with these playful animals—the perfect way to round off this one-of-a-kind Sardinian holiday.
