Wondering where to stay and what to see in Doha, Qatar? Tatler Asia’s head of VIP content and community (read: Middle East whisperer) has got you covered

In Qatar, visitors are welcomed with the genuine warmth and kindness of the Qatari people. Their hospitality enhances every experience—like a warm hug, their culture is deeply rooted in respect and friendliness. Qatar is not just a destination; it’s an invitation to delve into the heart of the Middle East. The nation offers a unique mix of tradition and 21st century architecture, making it a must-visit for travellers from around the globe.

The FIFA World Cup in 2022 showcased the country’s ability to host a global event, highlighting its hospitality and commitment to providing an unforgettable experience for fans from more than 140 countries. The tournament not only brought excitement and passion for football but also demonstrated that Qatar has so much more to offer beyond its stadiums, including a rich heritage and a thriving cultural scene.

In 2026, Art Basel will be heading to the Middle East too. Art Basel Qatar, which opens in February 2026, aims to provide international galleries with meaningful access to the vibrant MENA region. Designed as an intimate boutique fair, the inaugural edition is set to showcase a carefully curated selection of approximately fifty galleries. The event will be held at the M7 creative hub and the Doha Design District in downtown Msheireb, close to cultural landmarks such as the National Museum of Qatar. The country plans to open three additional museums by 2030, including the Art Mill Museum and the Lusail Museum.

Until then, here is Tatler’s list of not-to-be-missed sights in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

A stroll through Qanat Quartier is essential while visiting Doha, Qatar. Often dubbed the Venice of Qatar, this picturesque area features pastel-coloured buildings, charming canals and pedestrian-friendly piazzas. You can enjoy leisurely walks across stylish bridges while exploring boutiques and enjoying meals along the waterfront. It’s an Instagram paradise that captures the essence of both Venetian charm and Arabian chic.

No visit to Qatar is complete without experiencing the Katara Cultural Village. This district is home to theatres, galleries and performance venues that celebrate Qatari heritage. The architecture here beautifully blends traditional Islamic motifs with modern design, making it a feast for the eyes. Don’t miss the stunning amphitheatre that hosts world-class events throughout the year.

For an upscale shopping experience, head to Place Vendôme. This luxurious mall features high-end boutiques and designer stores alongside a variety of dining options. Whether you’re looking for fashion or unique souvenirs, this shopping destination caters to all tastes—the sheer size and scale of the mall will leave you breathless.

Visit the Mina District Fish Market

Tatler may not typically recommend fish markets while on holiday, but trust us—this one is a must-visit. For an authentic taste of local life, explore the Mina District and its beautiful—and fully operational—fish market. With stunning mosaic walls and stained glass ceilings, this marketplace looks more like an art gallery than a bustling bazaar. Yet, it is indeed a functioning hub where locals come to buy fresh seafood. This vibrant experience is a masterclass in Qatar’s ability to transform even the most mundane experiences into something fabulous. Nearby restaurants serve the catch of the day, allowing you to enjoy your meal in al fresco seating.

Discover Souq Waqif

A highlight of any trip to Doha is Souq Waqif, a bustling traditional market that dates back over a century. This marketplace is filled with eclectic shops offering everything from spices and perfumes to traditional clothing and handicrafts. The mud-rendered buildings and winding alleys create a setting reminiscent of a bygone era. Don’t miss the chance to taste authentic Qatari cuisine at one of the many outdoor cafés or indulge in shisha while soaking in the atmosphere.

Visit the National Museum of Qatar

Finally, immerse yourself in Qatar’s rich history at the National Museum of Qatar. Designed by Jean Nouvel in the shape of a desert rose, this architectural marvel houses exhibits that narrate Qatar’s past, present and future. Highlights include the Pearl Carpet of Baroda and various interactive displays.

Tatler tip: Three days is more than enough time to visit all the must-see places. Ubers are convenient, fast and affordable. Most places take credit cards and most people speak English.
