First time in Dubai? Tatler Asia’s head of VIP content and community (read: Middle East whisperer) has got you covered
Do you have any idea how hard it is to narrow down fifteen must-see things to do and see in Dubai? As someone born and raised in the desert, putting together this article was daunting. How does one go about representing their hometown in 500 words or less?
Dubai is a city that has skyrocketed from a humble pearl-diving village to a global metropolis. Today it’s a must-visit destination for travellers from all over the world, be it couples on their honeymoon or families with small children. If you’re visiting for the first time, here are a few things you need to do to make the most of your first trip.
Tatler tip: Be sure to check the temperature as Dubai can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius in the summer. The best times to visit are between October and April.

1. Soar to new heights at the Burj Khalifa
You can’t come to Dubai and not visit the Burj Khalifa. Standing at a staggering 828 metres, it’s the tallest building in the world (and one of the best forms of visual marketing ever). Head up to the observation deck on the 148th floor for the best views of the city, desert and the Arabian Gulf.
Tatler tip: Visit at sunset and do check the weather forecast. Dust storms are a real thing (though not at all like what you saw in 2011’s Mission in Possible: Ghost Protocol), so try your best to book the experience on a clear day.
2. Shop and play at the Dubai Mall
After your visit to Burj Khalifa, visit Dubai Mall—it’s not just for shopping aficionados; it’s a place where you can spend an entire day without getting bored. Beyond the high-end shops, you’ll find an indoor theme park, an Olympic-sized ice rink, and the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. Don’t miss the Dubai Fountain show, which is a spectacle of water, light, and music.
Tatler tip: If you're from Asia and are missing home, Dubai Mall has opened a China Town on the first floor opposite the Dubai Ice Rink which will give you all the feels.
3. Step into the future at The Museum of The Future
Dubbed the most beautiful building in the world, this cutting-edge institution is dedicated to showcasing innovation and technology and is a must-visit for tech enthusiasts. The museum has interactive exhibits, workshops and events that explore the possibilities of AI, robotics, sustainability and more. You can interact with futuristic concepts and gain insights into the potential impact of emerging technologies on society.
4. Savour culinary delights
Dubai’s culinary scene is as diverse as its population. From Michelin-starred restaurants to street food gems, there’s something for every palate. Be sure to try some of these much-loved eateries: Orfali Brothers, Three Fils, The Maine, Salt, Nammos, Gaia, Bungalo 34, HoneyComb Hifi, Sushi Samba and Mythos—as well as the real OGs, Ravi and Al Ustad Kebab for no frill meals.
Otherwise, the easiest option for first-timers is to head to Dubai’s International Financial District for five-star dining under one roof—think Amazonico, Cipriani, Sucre, La Petite Maison and Zuma.
Tatler tip: Most restaurants carry great vegetarian options but do check out the menus at Scalini, Jun’s, Terra, Signor Sassi and Three by Eva for veg-friendly options.
5. Step back in time at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood
For a taste of old Dubai, explore the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Wander through narrow lanes lined with traditional wind-tower houses and visit the Dubai Museum within the Al Fahidi Fort. This area is a stark but charming contrast to the glitz of modern Dubai and offers a glimpse into the city’s heritage.
Tatler tip: Have a meal at Arabian Tea House or XVA Gallery when you need to catch your breath.
6. Experience the thrill of a desert safari
Be sure to book a desert safari to experience the raw beauty of Dubai’s desert landscape. Enjoy dune bashing, try sandboarding and take a camel ride. As the day winds down, you’ll settle into a Bedouin-style camp for a delicious barbecue dinner, complete with traditional entertainment like belly dancing and henna design. You might even get to hold a falcon. As we say in Dubai: magic is made in the desert.
7. Cruise along Dubai Creek
A dhow cruise along Dubai Creek is a serene way to see the city. These traditional wooden boats offer dinner cruises where you can enjoy a meal while floating past historic and modern landmarks. It’s a perfect blend of the city’s past and present.
8. Explore The Palm Jumeirah
The Palm Jumeirah is an engineering marvel and a hub of luxury. Visit Atlantis, The Palm (commonly referred to as the old Atlantis), for its Aquaventure Waterpark and The Lost Chambers Aquarium. For a more relaxed vibe, unwind at one of the many beach clubs or take a monorail ride to view the island’s unique layout.
Also, be like Beyoncé and visit the new Atlantis The Royal. Also located on the Palm, this new resort is a must-see for any vacation goer. Have a meal at Nobu by the Beach; Ariana’s Persian Kitchen or Cloud 22 for an incredible swim at the sky pool.
Tatler tip: There are dozens of bars and beach clubs on The Palm—sundowners at February 30 or sunbathing by the pool at Tagomago will have you feeling like you’re on holiday all year round.
9. Bargain hunt at the souks
Dubai’s souks are a sensory delight. The Gold Souk in Deira is a must-visit for its dazzling array of jewellery. Though these days, most gold and diamond purchases happen at the fully air-conditioned Gold and Diamond Park, the souks are still worth a visit. The Spice Souk nearby is filled with the aromas of spices, herbs and incense. For colourful textiles and souvenirs, head to the Textile Souk in Bur Dubai.
10. Relax at Jumeirah Beach
Jumeirah Beach is ideal for basking in the sun, swimming, and enjoying water sports. With the iconic Burj Al Arab as your backdrop, it’s also a prime spot for stunning photos. For a more exclusive experience, visit one of the upscale beach clubs along the coast.
11. Stroll through Dubai Marina
Dubai Marina is a vibrant waterfront district perfect for an evening stroll. The Marina Walk is lined with cafes, restaurants and boutiques. For thrill-seekers, Skydive Dubai offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience with Instagram-worthy views of the Palm Jumeirah and the Arabian Gulf.
12. Immerse in culture at Global Village
Open from October to April, Global Village is a cultural extravaganza with pavilions from more than 75 countries. It’s a place where you can shop, dine and enjoy entertainment from around the world, all in one incredible location.
Tatler tip: It opens at 4pm, so plan your day accordingly.
13. Admire the Dubai Frame
The Dubai Frame is a testament to the city’s innovative spirit. This landmark offers panoramic views from its glass bridge, connecting old and new Dubai. Interactive on-site exhibits narrate the city’s past, present and future.
14. Enjoy Dubai’s arts scene
Al Serkal Avenue in Dubai is a must-visit destination for art, design, and culture enthusiasts. This district is home to a thriving arts scene, featuring world-class galleries like Carbon 12, Lawrie Shabibi and The Third Line that showcase cutting-edge contemporary art from local and international artists. At the heart of Serkal Avenue is Cinema Akil, an independent film house that screens a carefully curated selection of arthouse, independent and international cinema (Fun fact: They once held a retrospective of director Wong Kar-wai’s hits).
Beyond the galleries and cinema, the district also hosts a range of design studios and creative businesses, offering a unique glimpse into Dubai’s burgeoning creative industries. Don’t forget to check out Fiker Institute to see the most beautiful library in the city.
15. Chill at Ski Dubai
Escape the desert heat at Ski Dubai, an indoor ski resort in the Mall of the Emirates. Whether you want to ski, snowboard, or just play in the snow, it’s a surreal experience in the heart of the desert.
