The daughter of art collectors Farouk and Aliya Khan loves New York City in winter

Why is New York your favourite city destination in the winter?

I love how different being in a city is in the cold; wrapping up warm, sipping on hot drinks and the holiday spirit in the air everywhere! I’ve always felt New York has the best of everything I love: from amazing art shows to great food, and is a great city to walk through. Last winter the Whitney Museum staged a retrospective of one of my favourite artists, Jasper Johns, and so in my mind New York was where I wanted to spend my winter break!

What are the must-do activities in winter?

Have a look at what’s on at their world-class museums—MoMA, Guggenheim, the Whitney Museum, the Met—and also the schedule at Lincoln Centre. I love catching a play or ballet with friends and New York always has great options for both. Have a walk along the High Line and enjoy views of the city and beyond!

To get into a festive spirit, go skating at Rockefeller Centre and check out the Christmas Lights at Dyker Heights, Brooklyn!

Which is your favourite restaurant?

Lobster frites at Pastis after visually feasting on great art at the Whitney Museum is a favourite activity. Art and dining go hand in hand for me, both being genuine pleasures in life. A real treat was to be invited to dine at The Century Association, one of the most exclusive private members’ clubs in New York. It was delightful to wander through the Palazzo-style building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places as a true New York landmark, and learn more about American art history.

My two favourite cuisines in America are Italian and Mexican. I love Via Carota for Italian while my secret taco spot is La Superior in Brooklyn. I was introduced to Miss Lily’s Caribbean restaurant this trip and it immediately made my go-to list.

What are your must-have beauty essentials for winter?

I have Le Labo lip balm, Clarins hand cream and The Inkey List eye cream on hand from the minute I land—cold weather makes my skin extra dry. Grown Alchemist hand sanitiser and Thieves essential oil from Young Living have become a post-Covid staple too.

In the winter my beauty routine differs from at home in Malaysia, with more intricate prep involved. I start with Dr Dennis Gross Universal Daily Peel before layering on sunblock (winter sun is surprisingly harsh), Caudalie day cream and Vitamin C serum from The Ordinary, plus a matifying primer.

Also not strictly a beauty essential, but one of the best parts of NYC are the great blow-dry bars all over the city. My go-to is Drybar in Greenwich Village, a grooming lifesaver after a morning class at Barry’s Bootcamp.

Name your must-have pack list.

You can always find two black cashmere sweaters, from either Prada, From Future or Uniqlo. Lowland boots from Stuart Weitzman are great because I can walk around the city all day then go straight out in the evening. I love gold and sequin accessories for evening glamour.

My last trip to NYC I had my green sequin Fendi baguette and my signature selection of gold knuckledusters. But my favourite must-haves for any trip are my pashmina shawls inherited from my mom!
