Tatler’s head of VIP content and community, Tara Sobti, shares how to spend 48 hours in Al Ula, the Tatler way
As someone who has spent their life in the Middle East, I have a deep appreciation for the region’s culture and heritage. Al Ula, Saudi Arabia, is a place that holds significant historical and natural appeal. Located in the heart of the desert, it is a distinct experience that combines ancient sites with modern amenities. From the well-preserved ruins of Hegra to the striking natural formations like Elephant Rock, Al Ula is a compelling destination for those interested in history, adventure, or simply enjoying the finer aspects of travel. Here’s how to spend 48 hours in AlUla, the Tatler way.
Stay at Habitas Al Ula
At one point in time, there were only two primary hotels in Al Ula: Habitas Al Ula and Banyan Tree. Today, there are more to choose from, but classics will always remain just that—classic. Habitas Al Ula features eco-friendly accommodations, designed to harmonise with the stunning desert landscape. The atmosphere is tranquil and includes contemporary villas with outdoor showers and breathtaking views of the canyons. This resort emphasises wellness and has a deep interest in the arts, offering a serene spa, various activities (hello, outdoor trampolines!) and art installations peppered around the property.
Tatler Tip: Stargazing is a must and each room is equipped with a telescope. Also, considering you’re in the heart of the desert, don’t be surprised by how dust-free your rooms are! Not a speck in sight.
Explore Hegra

Hegra, a Unesco World Heritage site built by the Nabateans, is undoubtedly a highlight of any trip to Al Ula. With over 100 tombs carved into sandstone cliffs, this site rivals Petra in Jordan. Book an organised tour in advance to explore the intricate architecture. Aim for an evening slot to capture the best photographs as the setting sun casts beautiful shadows on the tombs.
Chill out at Elephant Rock
Just a short drive from Hegra, Elephant Rock is a striking natural formation resembling an elephant. This area is perfect for relaxation, with cafés and food stalls nearby. Visit in the evening when the site comes alive with light, making it an ideal place to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Be amazed by the Maraya mirror

No visit to Al Ula is complete without marvelling at Maraya— the largest mirrored structure in the world. Access inside is available only with a reservation, so plan ahead to enjoy this spectacular sight. Be sure to try Maraya Social by chef Jason Atherton located inside.
Tatler tip: Many first time visitors believe this building is empty on the inside—it’s not. Think twice before fixing your make-up, or adjusting your clothes in the reflection.
Eat at Somewhere restaurant

Imagine waterfalls, palm trees and a menu that celebrates local flavours with a modern twist. Somewhere is located in the main city and will satiate all your Middle Eastern food cravings.
Explore Al Ula’s Old Town
Step back in time by wandering through Al Ula’s Old Town, characterised by its mud-brick houses and shops. Here, you can enjoy a warm welcome with traditional saffron coffee and dates. The area is lively at night, making it a great spot for dining, shopping and picking up local souvenirs.
Soar above the desert in a hot air balloon
For a truly unforgettable experience, go on a hot air balloon ride at dawn. You’ll get to experience the desert landscape from above as the sun rises, illuminating the stunning rock formations and valleys below. For those seeking adventure, the Al Ula Stairway and Giant Swing also provide thrilling experiences. Options include climbing a suspended ladder and zip lining down.
Tatler tip: Sandstorms are real and the weather in the desert can be finicky. Book your hot air balloon rides for day one of your trip, so that in the event of a bad weather cancellation, you can rebook the experience for the next day.
Finally, the cultural programming in Al Ula is second to none. There are concerts, intimate shows and recitals happening throughout the year (think symphony orchestras to all-night dance festivals). Be sure to check what’s happening during the week you are visiting to make the most of your trip.
