La Union isn’t all about surfing and waves, you can also trek the wilds or tour the breathtaking landscapes

Surfing comes first to mind when thinking about La Union. But not all of us dare to challenge the waves—in fear of being washed away to the sea. Thankfully, the province of La Union is massive—with plenty of alternative activities for travellers who still want some adventure or culture. For instance, the municipality of San Gabriel is mountainous, a sharp contrast to the fine sands of Urbiztondo. From waterfalls to mountains and sprawling landscapes, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Grape Picking

While driving to your destination, you’ve probably noticed plenty of signs that say ‘Grape Picking’. These local orchards have rows of grapevines for you to pick. The best part? Entrance is usually free, and you only pay for what you wish to keep.

Minor Basilica and Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Charity

Located in the city of Agoo, the Minor Basilica and Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Charity—simply known as the Agoo Basilica—is known for its unconventional architecture. With two non-identical bell towers and Mexican baroque design features, it offers a unique sight for visitors.

In 1971, Victorino Ligot, the first bishop of the Diocese of San Fernando de La Union, petitioned Rome for the canonical coronation of the 17th-century wooden statue of Our Lady of Charity. Officiated by Archbishop Carmine Rocco, the Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, the basilica boasts a rose-stained window in its dome to commemorate that event.

Tangadan Falls

Located in the mountainous area of San Gabriel, La Union, the Tangadan Falls are just a 20-minute drive from Urbiztondo. It’s highly recommended that you commute, as a tour guide is required to enter the premises, and they come with a tricycle ride. Once there, you can enjoy ice-cold, crystal-clear waters in a calm environment. The falls tower is around 12 metres high, allowing for an exciting cliff dive.

Explore the nightlife

Next to surfing, La Union’s vibrant nightlife is the reason why people go here in the first place. The most popular spot by far is Flotsam & Jetsam Hostel. They host frequent parties where travellers can loosen up and meet new people. If you want something more intimate, La Union’s shore hosts plenty of bars to visit where you can listen to the crashing waves with a cocktail in hand.
