In the world of racquet sports, a new star has risen rapidly and is illuminating courts across the globe: padel. Originating in Mexico in 1969 and popularised in Spain, padel has now captivated participants from the US to Asia, gaining a reputation as the world’s fastest-growing sport.
It’s particularly lauded for its social aspect, often played in doubles, making it a perfect social sport. Naturally, padel has also been growing in popularity in Malaysia, and it’s now getting a major boost with the launch of the Volvo Padel Open.
Steering beyond the roads and into the padel courts, Volvo Car Malaysia is hosting the country’s inaugural official padel tournament and is scheduled to run over two action-packed weekends from June 8 to 15, 2024.

Above The prize pool for the Volvo Padel Open is up to RM100,000
This tournament is set to draw nearly 500 participants across the Klang Valley, partnering with local clubs, including Ascaro Padel & Social Club, Padelground, and PadelKu. With a prize pool of RM100,000, the tournament promises not only intense competition but also aims to solidify the sport’s presence in the region.

Daniel Liljekvist of Ascaro Padel & Social Club noted the significance of the partnership with Volvo, highlighting how it enhances the sport’s appeal and accessibility, “Partnerships like this not only help elevate the experience for our players and customers but also allow us to stay true to our mission of championing the vibrant community and style surrounding this growing sport.”
Representatives from other partnering clubs shared similar sentiments. Oliver Cheah of Padelground expressed enthusiasm about introducing the sport to a broader demographic, including young sportsetters and fitness enthusiasts. Meanwhile, Charl Hermus Marais of PadelKu emphasised the tournament’s role in nurturing talent and expanding the local padel community.

The Volvo Padel Open will feature four competition categories: Intermediate, Open, Women’s, and Wildcard, ensuring opportunities for players at various skill levels. Participants must register as doubles teams, with skill assessments conducted at sign-up to ensure fair and balanced matches.
