What’s one festive party or dinner must-have that has been a lifesaver for you as a host?

Valerie Ong: My friends and I will always focus on the theme of our wines first before anything else. After that, we start building the rest of our food menu based on the wine we picked, and choosing decorations and song choices for the night! We usually bring a bottle or two each and organise a blind tasting, so that the party would be engaging, fun and a learning experience too that involves all our interests. So if there’s one thing we can’t go without for a festive party, it’s the wine!

Champagne and wine are the perfect conversation starters! We do Secret Santa too, so everyone is assigned to a guest’s name, with a specific budget and theme so that we will always end up having a good laugh at the end of the night.

What’s one festive party or dinner must-have that has been a lifesaver for you as a host?

Michele Kwok: It’s having all my family members come together to plan the party! When you have a football team of more than 12 family members coming together to get the task done, everything runs like clockwork. Everyone will take on a task to prep for the Christmas dinner. From the décor, the food and beverage menu, to the activities—like who plays Santa Claus for the evening and gift-exchanges—our parties are never short of food, drinks, laughter, music and noise.

I feel the host plays a very important part in how the night turns out. So, if they are the sort who loves merrymaking and getting the party started, everything just falls into place as a lively atmosphere is already set. For my family, all of this comes quite naturally, as I think it’s in our genetic make-up!

A must-have addition for our Christmas parties is the children’s choir. These beautiful children are raising funds for their church by visiting houses door-to-door singing Christmas carols. We would dance, sing-along, and then invite the children to dine with us. Everybody gets to go back home with a Christmas present, which just completes the evening for my family as a blessed Christmas isn’t without its merriment!

What’s one festive party or dinner must-have that has been a lifesaver for you as a host?

Soo Shea Pin: I think a key to being a good host, is feeling good and comfortable on the day of the party, and that means dressing in what you love and will feel great in. This immediately puts you in a good mood and boosts your confidence when handling the event. Never put yourself in uncomfortable shoes or a dress that is too tight (you need to eat, too). My advice? Wear what makes you feel good and things will fall into place!

My daughters, Wenfei and Wenli and I are always excited about getting the perfect dessert for every gathering! And everyone should always have something to look forward to at the end of the meal. It doesn’t have to be an artful sugary confection, but something wholesome and yummy! Our favourites include the Hazelnut Chocolate Cake from Plump Cafe in Bangsar, a classic rum and raisin cake, a good old Victoria sponge cake and my all-time favourite: the glorious panettone. Don’t forget to add lots of cream! And stop counting the calories.
