Dr Steve Mark Gan of the Gan Advanced Osseointegration Center (GAOC) discusses advancements in dental technology and what the future holds
In discussing the rapid progress of technology, the spotlight almost invariably falls on artificial intelligence (AI), engineering or the latest smartphone. However, its profound effects are also equally felt in the wellness, health and dental industries. There is no greater authority on the matter than Dr Steve Mark Gan, founder of the Gan Advanced Osseointegration Center (GAOC).
Integrating new technologies into an industry as complex as dentistry presents its own set of challenges, but it is one that GAOC has long been committed to addressing. “When I was a student and first decided to pursue dentistry, I had one clear goal: to build a dental network that would not only be the best in the Philippines, but also stand alongside the world-class dental centres of Asia. That vision has never changed,” Gan declares.

“One of the earliest and most important milestones was the introduction of X-rays in the 19th century, which completely transformed diagnosis by taking it out of the realm of guesswork,” Gan explains. “Later, the advent of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) became another revolutionary leap, especially in implant dentistry. CBCT allows precise planning of implant placement, minimising risks and greatly improving success rates.” Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technology, for instance, enable practitioners to create accurately fitting veneers or dental prostheses. Meanwhile, tasks such as extractions and restorations have also become far easier thanks to implements like the electric drill. The mission is clear: to make procedures quicker, more precise, and as painfree as possible. In time, those with persistent dental anxiety will be comforted.
“At GAOC, we emphasise to patients that these are not just extra procedures,” Gan adds. “They are essential tools that ensure safety, accuracy and the best possible outcomes.” Thus, GAOC continues to set the standard for world-class, patient-centred dental care.

While these implements have now become indispensable tools, two outside forces are poised to become just as essential in the field: robotics and AI. Gan has swiftly integrated these into GAOC. “There has been a powerful push toward [them] in dentistry today, and we’ve embraced these advancements. For example, patients can now preview the final results of their aesthetic treatments through AI-powered photo and video simulations, often in a few clicks. AI also enhances diagnostics by instantly identifying areas of concern in radiographs, making consultations clearer and easier for patients to understand.” 3D printing, too, has found its place within the industry.
As dentists are more empowered and enabled to provide personalised and efficient service, patient care is improved. “At GAOC, we encounter patients whose bone is too thin to support traditional implants,” Gan explains. Such instances often meant that it was challenging—if not impossible—to conduct the procedure that patients needed. “Today, with the help of advanced planning software and guided surgery, we can carefully map out the procedure in 3D, identifying the exact position and angulation of the implant even in thin bone. What once seemed unachievable is now performed with precision and predictable success.”

Gan recognises the importance of such advancements not being confined to his clinic. Through GAOC Dental Academy’s training programmes, internships, and collaborations with global experts, the next generation of dental professionals is well-equipped to deal with whatever challenges that follow. “Our passion has always been to push the boundaries of dental care in the Philippines,” Gan declares. “Looking ahead, we are focused on expanding our reach, strengthening medical tourism and integrating the latest global innovations in digital dentistry, implantology and cosmetic care.”
New technologies emerge daily, as a means to fulfil the mission that Gan—and GAOC—set out to achieve: not just to provide world-class dental care, but to change the expectation that such care can only be received abroad. “It is about shaping a culture of excellence and innovation,” Gan muses. “I believe that Filipinos deserve nothing less than [the best]. If I can help make that the standard, then I consider that to be my greatest contribution.”
