Cover Ally Mukhriz adores her cats, Kylo (pictured) and Kale

Ally's cats Kylo and Kale can always count on her to get them out of sticky situations

To celebrate National Pet Day, Tatler speaks to three pet owners in our community. We meet two felines, Kale and Kylo, in Ally Mukhriz’s home.

“We got Kale and Kylo two years ago; one night I just said, ‘I think we need cats.’ Both of us always had cats; Ezran (her husband) has even rescued street cats. Meanwhile, my dad loves cats, so our household had them. We thought we needed to get a kitten,” Ally says.

Surprisingly, Ally found her cats through mudah.my—the popular online marketplace where people buy and sell a variety of products and services.

She recalls going to see the kittens, with her mind set on getting one, but upon arriving at the house, discovers the kittens being 'terrorised' by the man’s two young daughters. “The girls were full of energy, running around, placing the kittens on my lap, and insisting I see how cute they were. It was both fun and chaotic and I felt like the cats were afraid of the girls, so we decided to ‘save’ two kittens instead.”

The two-month-old kittens were about the size of Ally’s hand when she took them home. Then when it came to naming them, Ally knew she wanted to name one after a vegetable and admits that Onion and Garlic were among the options considered as well. In the end, she settled on Kale for the whiter cat, while Kylo the darker one was named after the Star Wars character.

“Initially, Kale was incredibly naughty while Kylo was reserved and shy. Everyone preferred Kylo for her demeanour, while Kale was just a princess. But after they got neutered, they both calmed down, Kylo is a bit wary around people but when it’s just us, she gets needy and comes up to us all the time. Meanwhile, Kale will leave you alone and only sees you on her terms,” shares Ally.

Cats typically groom themselves but Ally makes it a point to regularly check on her fluffy cats’ coats. When it becomes too matted, to the point that she can’t handle it, only then do they visit the groomers.

Ally also shared how curiosity can kill the cat. “One day when Ezran was lifting weights, Kylo stuck her paw in between the weights, which then squished her hand—thankfully, she was fine! And on the same day, Kale was sitting on the windowsill of our third storey, then disappeared. We opened our front door to go look for her and that’s when we saw her climbing up the stairs, meowing, with grass all over her; she fell three floors!”

After hearing the stories, on top of Kale and Kylo surviving a bout of parvovirus too, we’re thankful that cats are resilient, and must believe they have nine lives now.
