Lotus, a brand once defined by featherweight sports cars and minimalism, has made the transition to the EV era with its Emeya—a high-performance electric sedan
It’s difficult to imagine a Lotus as anything other than a stripped-down, lightweight sports car, but that philosophy hasn’t exactly translated to a huge commercial success. Currently, under Geely’s stewardship, Lotus has embraced electrification to expand its lineup beyond niche performance machines. The recent Emira sports car was a nostalgic nod to combustion engine sportscars, but real success lies in offering a broader range of vehicles. Lotus has already released the Eletre SUV and now brings us the Emeya—its first all-electric grand tourer.
From the outset, the Emeya makes a striking impression. The taut, sculpted lines and aggressive aerodynamics give it a dynamic stance, while the innovative ‘porous design’ channels air efficiently, over and through the bodywork, reducing drag and enhancing downforce. The active front grille adjusts for cooling or sleekness as needed, blending elegance with function. It’s a bold aesthetic that respects Lotus’s racing roots while embracing the future.

Inside, Lotus has abandoned its traditionally spartan approach for a cabin that competes with the best luxury EVs. Premium sustainable materials—Alcantara, carbon fibre, and repurposed textiles—create an eco-conscious yet opulent space. A widescreen digital display, minimalist dashboard, and head-up display with augmented reality provide cutting-edge technology. Plush, supportive seating and a panoramic glass roof enhance the feeling of spaciousness. For a brand previously rooted in pure performance, this is a complete paradigm shift.
Yet, the Emeya is not just about aesthetics. The top-spec version has a dual-motor powertrain that delivers up to 905 hp, launching it from 0-100 km/h in a stunning 2.8 seconds. The review Emeya S comes also with a dual-motor arrangement, but with 603 hp, and it sprints to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds with a regulated top speed of 250 km/h.
The low centre of gravity, thanks to its floor-mounted flat-battery pack and an advanced air suspension system, ensures an exhilarating drive experience. Whether carving through meandering roads or cruising on the highway, the Emeya delivers the Lotus’s legendary handling prowess while providing refined comfort, something that was not part of Lotus’s original repertoire.

Electric vehicles often battle range anxiety, but Lotus addresses this with a battery capable of up to 610 km on a single charge (WLTP). More impressively, its 800V ultra-fast charging system replenishes 80% of the battery in just 18 minutes on a 350 kWh DC charger. Long-distance travel becomes not only feasible but convenient—essential for a true grand tourer.
What sets the Emeya apart is its engaging driving experience. Unlike many digital-heavy EVs, it preserves a modicum of tactile connection to the road. The steering remains precise and weighty, while the adaptive damping system evolves dynamically with the driver’s inputs. Even in a software-defined automotive era, the Emeya provides some of the driving spirit that Lotus enthusiasts cherish.
The Emeya, offers a compelling middle ground in the sports EV segment—a blend of Lotus’s signature handling, modern luxury, and cutting-edge EV performance. Engaging without being overbearing, refined without detachment, with a legendary name that has previously won seven constructors’ championships and six drivers’ championships in Formula One.

For Lotus’ first-generation foray into the EV arena, it is remarkably free of issues. Given its mix of performance, craftsmanship, and exclusivity, the Emeya competes with the upper echelon of the segment. However, with prices starting at $427,800 without options or COE, it seriously undercuts those in the premium EV market like the Porsche Taycan and Audi RS eTron GT.
Ultimately, the Emeya is more than just another electric sedan—it’s a bold statement of intent. Lotus, once defined by lightweight, analogue machines, now proves it can thrive in the electrified era. Performance, luxury, and sustainability need not be mutually exclusive. In that sense, the Emeya doesn’t just succeed—it excels.
