For 100 years, Le Mans has been at the very pinnacle of motorsports—and Ferrari’s victory signals a return to form for the Prancing Horse

In the realm of motorsports, few events hold as much allure and grandeur as the legendary Le Mans race. It is a contest that has captivated the hearts of racing aficionados for decades, and this year, at the 100th edition of Le Mans, Ferrari made an audacious comeback after a hiatus of nearly five decades. The invitation extended by the revered Italian automaker to witness this historic moment was not merely a gesture; it was an exclusive ticket to witness the rebirth of a legend.

Le Mans became a distant memory for Ferrari since their last victory in 1966, their famous battle with Ford, immortalised on the silver screen in the acclaimed film Ford v Ferrari. This absence from the race had left a void in the hearts of enthusiasts and had become a symbol of Ferrari’s longing to reclaim their former glory. Thus, the weight of the invitation became apparent as we arrived at the gates of the illustrious Ferrari factory in Maranello, four days prior to the race.

Ferrari had extended this coveted invitation to a select group of around 50 esteemed members of the international press, recognising the significance of their return to Le Mans. It was a daring move, considering they would be pitted against the reigning champion, Toyota, who had clinched victory in the past five races. The stage was set for an epic battle.

Our epic 1,300 km journey to the Centennial Anniversary of Le Mans began in style, as we embarked on a convoy of Ferrari press cars. A magnificent Ferrari Portofino M was at our disposal, a testament to the iconic brand’s commitment to excellence. With the roar of the engine and the wind in our hair, we set off on the very route that Ferrari factory cars of the past would have taken. Though the highways had vastly improved since then, the spirit of the journey remained unchanged.

On the first day, we embarked on a breathtaking drive from Maranello to the Michelin Museum, traversing approximately 770 km. The initial excitement of driving a Ferrari soon gave way to fatigue as the hours ticked by. A mishap with the navigation system, where someone mistakenly selected the “avoid toll roads” option, added an unwelcome extension to the adventure. After wasting a few precious hours, we resorted to the trusted Google Maps, quickly realising that toll roads were indeed the preferred choice for efficient progress on long journeys.

Despite its reputation as a grand tourer rather than an extreme racing machine, the 620 hp Portofino M proved to be a remarkable companion, effortlessly devouring the seemingly endless stretch of road ahead. Not only did it possess immense power, but it also boasted ample storage space for our week-long journey, accommodating luggage filled with clothing, camera equipment, and laptops. Along the way, the approving nods and thumbs-up from bystanders served as a testament to the timeless allure of a Ferrari. It was a reminder that the reverence for this iconic brand ran deep in the hearts of people.

As exhaustion and hunger set in, we reached Clermont-Ferrand, eagerly seeking respite. However, parking our precious Ferraris at the hotel proved to be a nerve-wracking challenge, with steep and narrow passages testing our driving skills. Relieved, we handed over the keys to the accompanying Ferrari tech crew, entrusting them with the care of our beloved machines.

The second day of our journey took us from Clermont-Ferrand to Chateau Montbraye, covering a distance of approximately 450 km. After a quick breakfast, we embarked on a drive to Michelin’s Research and Development centre, where we were treated to an enlightening visit to their tyre testing facility. The vast 450-hectare facility, buzzing with the energy of its 4,500 employees, exuded an atmosphere akin to that of tech giants like Google. The passionate faces of the staff revealed their dedication to pushing the boundaries of innovation. Energised by the experience, we set off to complete the remaining leg of our journey.

By the end of the day, we arrived at our destination, the exquisite Hotel Country Club Le Mans. The arduous journey had taken us over 1,300 km, including detours for fuel and visits to Michelin’s factory and museum. We were undeniably fatigued, but it pales in comparison to the immense physical and mental stamina required to conquer the gruelling Le Mans 24-hour race. Each race car would cover over 5,000 km during the race, with the three drivers taking turns to push their limits to maintain their positions.

And so, the day arrived when the mighty engines roared to life, signalling the beginning of the qualifying. In a thrilling turn of events, Ferrari secured the hyperpole with their 499P LMP1 race cars, clinching the prestigious LMP1 pole position. Pole position holds greater weight in Formula One, its significance over the course of the 24 hours of the Le Mans endurance race is not as important. Yet, this achievement highlighted the formidable potential of the Ferrari cars, hinting at the possibility of outpacing the mighty Toyotas. The pressure mounted as the team prepared for the challenge that lay ahead.

The sheer magnitude of the Le Mans 24-hour race unfolded before our eyes as we ventured onto the iconic track. Spanning over 13 km per lap, the racecourse revealed a dynamic environment, with rain pouring down in one section while the pit straight gleamed under bright sunshine. Before reaching the track itself, we found ourselves amidst a mesmerising sea of cars, each vying for a coveted parking spot scattered around the perimeter. In this spectacle, we witnessed the camper and trailer parks, where rows of neatly arranged tents housed passionate enthusiasts eager to experience the thrill of sleeping alongside the track during the 24-hour race.

Navigating through the chaotic traffic, we relied on our trusty Waze app to guide us along the least congested path to our designated parking spot. To our surprise, the spot turned out to be located at the very end of the track, necessitating a considerably longer walk to the spectator entrance. What appeared to be a mere few hundred meters on the printed map translated into a journey of forty minutes or more, reminding us that great experiences often require patience and perseverance.

As we approached the entrance gates, the palpable influx of racing fans enveloped us in a wave of excitement. Despite the early summer timing, the atmosphere was reminiscent of a mid-summer festival, intensified by the absence of air-conditioning and shelter from the scorching sun. In contrast, European attendees embraced the sweltering heat with unwavering enthusiasm, basking in the joy of the moment.

The journey had led us to the heart of the race, where Ferrari’s journey to victory unfolded before our eyes. It may not have been the dream 1-2 victory but it was a triumph that marked a significant milestone for the iconic brand, revitalising their image after struggles in the Formula One arena. For most of the 24 hours it was nail-biting as the then reigning champions, Toyota matched the pace of the Ferraris, indeed retaking the lead a few times. Ferrari’s leading car had some issues and fell five laps behind but their other car had the pace and endurance to hold on to the lead until the chequered flag fell at 4 pm on Sunday.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a pilgrimage for every true motoring enthusiast, an event that should grace every bucket list. For Ferrari owners intrigued by this awe-inspiring experience, official agents offer a range of packages to suit every budget, from tent accommodations to private jet arrivals. The opportunity to participate or spectate at this extraordinary event awaits those who dare to dream.
