I think that the one thing that’s so beautiful about gymnastics is that you can do both. I trained to build my power and strength through strength training. I did a lot of physical strength training in the gym and also in the gymnastics gym, training my flexibility and choreography. I also did ballet. In general, there are a lot of types of training that need to be done to be the best in my routine.”

Her quest for the Olympic Games wasn’t easy. Determined, she trained about four to six hours a day, six days a week. “I had a wonderful coach in Miss Natalia who made sure that all our calligraphy, dance movements, and power were interlocked. That’s why if you watch our floor exercise within our balance beam, it’s really an extension of ourselves, making sure that we perform to the best of our capabilities. People always say that we make it look so easy but that tells you how much effort it put into making sure that it looks easy. Gymnasts look so powerful and have so much strength, but also have that quality of making sure that we’re graceful and able to perform at the highest standard,” Farah reveals.

“We had a lot of training techniques, both in the gymnastics and the weight training gyms, and used a lot of technology. I used machines to see how my strength was progressing to build on my power and my landing capabilities. In the gymnastics gym, I used camera work to monitor myself and identify the angles that needed to perform so there was a lot of sports science that went into the training sessions,” Farah comments.

“There was also the recovery side of it such as compressions boots which are a lot of hot and cold baths to make sure that we recover fast and can go out there to train and compete at the highest level, to enhance our capabilities and ensure that we recovered at our best,” she adds.

“It’s very important to make sure that we’re safe and that we don’t get injured to be able to train and compete at the highest level. In every training session, we needed the appropriate mats, the best apparatus, and training styles to ensure our safety and that we were able to do everything in a timely manner. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that we go home safe and sound. When we know that we’re in a good arena, it would allow us to compete and do our very best. Gymnastics really beautifully balances strength and grace,” Farah emphasises.

I think that translates into my routines because on the vault, it’s just full-on power and on the bars, it takes a lot of strength and power. When I go on to the fork size and balance beam, it’s a marge of big, powerful skills but also the artistry of the dance and the flexibility of the jumps and turns. It’s such a beautiful balance that plays a lot into the aspects of artistic gymnastics,” she affirms.

The same applies to the other aspects of Farah’s life. “As a person, we should be able to be strong and powerful, but also graceful in the tasks that we do every day, in our work and how we accomplish something,” Farah says as a closing note.
