By clinching the EGOT status, Davis becomes the 18th person to do so since 1961

After years of fans waiting for her to achieve EGOT status, Viola Davis finally took home an award at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, completing all four and making her the 18th person to accomplish the feat.

The EGOT status is given to outstanding individuals who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony award in their career, and the How to Get Away with Murder star joined the elusive list after claiming a win for her memoir, Finding Me, in the category Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording on February 5.

“I just EGOT,” Davis says as she accepted the award. “I wrote this book to honour the 6-year-old Viola. To honour her—her life, her joy, her trauma. Everything,” she further explains.

According to Davis, Finding Me is a “deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to herself.”

With her win, Davis joins Jennifer Hudson, Alan Menken, and John Legend on the EGOT status list. Other honourees are Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, and Richard Rodgers, who made history as the first person to win all four major entertainment awards in 1961.

She also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Fences.
