Learn all about EGOT and this elite group of people who can proudly say they are among the best in the entertainment industry

History was made during the 2022 Tony Awards last Sunday, June 12. Jennifer Hudson became the latest addition to the elite roster of performers with careers illustrious enough to achieve the coveted EGOT status.

Today, let's take a look and learn more about Jennifer Hudson's newfound fame and everything there is to know about the EGOT:

EGOT is an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, and references individuals who have won at least one award from all four of these institutions. They signify achievements in television, recording, film, and theatre, respectively. Achieving all four awards is seen as a "grand slam" in the show business industry. To win these awards, an individual does not necessarily need to perform – be an actor/actress, singer, etc. There are varying categories for each of these awards, but as long as the trophy is awarded, that is one step closer to the EGOT.

Only 16 people had achieved EGOT status before Jeniffer Hudson joined their ranks as the 17th, completing the "grand slam" with a Tony Award for the musical A Strange Loop. She is also the third Black EGOT winner, following Whoopi Goldberg and John Legend, and the third-youngest EGOT recipient after Robert Lopez (39), and John Legend (39), with Hudson herself being 40 years old at the time of her victory.

Hudson's first steps towards EGOT status began in 2006 when she won an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in Dreamgirls. The film was set in the Motown era and followed the rise and fall of a girl group, and Hudson's rendition of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" brought standing ovations in movie theatres across the country.

Next came her two Grammys: one of her performances in the Best Musical Theatre Album for The Color Purple, where she performed alongside Tony-winner Cynthia Erivo and Danielle Brooks in 2017, while the second Grammy was awarded Best R&B Album for her self-titled album in 2009.

Not content to stop at two awards under her belt, Hudson went on to claim the Daytime Emmy Award for her work voicing and co-producing the VR-animated film Baba Yaga.

To round out the list and cinch EGOT status, Hudson had her first Tony accolade for co-producing the stage musical A Strange Loop. This Broadway musical, whose book, music, and lyrics were written by Michael R. Jackson, brought home two Tony Awards last Sunday: Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. The book from which it was adapted won the Pulitzer Prize for best drama in 2020. The story follows the life and internal struggle of Usher, a black, queer writer writing a musical about a black, queer writer.

With this last award, Hudson is elevated to the entertainment industry's elite, alongside Rita Moreno, Alan Menken, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend, Mike Nichols, Mel Brooks, and Whoopi Goldberg. From here on, the possibilities of how much farther Jennifer Hudson can go are limitless, and it's exciting to see what she will do next.
