Michelle Yeoh's co-stars in 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' also received acting noms, making up a stellar line-up of Asian nominees in a single year

As expected, Everything Everywhere All At Once garnered acting nominations for best actress (Michelle Yeoh), best supporting actor (Ke Huy Quan), and best supporting actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and—surprise, surprise—Stephanie Hsu). Yeoh is now the first Malaysian ever to be nominated for a best actress Oscar. Her nomination comes on the heels of her historic win at the Golden Globes. She is a hot favourite to win the category—her only real contender is Cate Blanchett, who is nominated for Tár. The indie turned juggernaut Everything Everywhere All at Once also leads the Oscar race with a total of 11 nominations, including best picture.

While technically Yeoh is the first person who identifies as Asian to be nominated for best actress Oscar, an article in Washington Post dated January 25, 2023, highlighted that Merle Oberon, a biracial actress was the first Asian to be nominated in the category, for Dark Angel in 1936. According to the article, Oberon was born to a mother of mixed South Asian origin and a white British father, but she obscured her biracial identity to make it in Hollywood.

Apart of Yeoh, Quan, and Hsu, other Asians on the list of nominees include Hong Chau, nominated for best supporting actress for The Whale; Daniel Kwan, one half of the Daniels nominated for best director for Everything Everywhere All at Once; director Domee Shi, nominated for best animated film for Turning Red; and M.M. Keeravaani and Chandrabose who are nominated for best original song for Naatu Naatu from the Indian movie, RRR

The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on January 24 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills by Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams. Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, and The Fabelmans were some of the top favourites to receive nods going into the announcement, as were Elvis, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Top Gun: Maverick

The winners will be announced on March 12, 2023 with Jimmy Kimmel as host. Read on to find out who are the nominees in the major categories.
