White Cube Hong Kong once again highlights the dynamics of contemporary Southeast Asian art through an exhibition titled “Thresholds.”
White Cube Hong Kong once again highlights the dynamics of contemporary Southeast Asian art with the exhibition "Thresholds," running from October 31, 2025, to January 10, 2026, at their gallery space on Connaught Road Central. The exhibition presents nine contemporary artists with practices rooted in or connected to Indonesia, showcasing a spectrum of works that explore the cycles of life, death, and spiritual and symbolic processes of transformation.
Curated by Galuh Sukardi, an independent curator based in Bali, “Thresholds” features works in various media—from painting, sculpture, textiles, drawings, to silver—from artists across generations: Galuh Anindita, Arahmaiani, Christine Ay Tjoe, Nadiah Bamadhaj, Kei Imazu, Ines Katamso, I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih (Murni), Citra Sasmita, and Jennifer Tee.

Navigating the 'Threshold' in Spirituality and Life
Each artist reflects on a journey of personal and collective transformation—whether spiritual, political, physical, or mythological—that forms a communal dialogue within this exhibition. The narratives of these works demonstrate that light and dark, birth and death, are not opposing entities, but rather forces that maintain balance.
This concept is rooted in the philosophy of Balinese poleng cloth—a black-and-white checkered cloth often draped over statues and sacred trees. Poleng symbolizes the unity of duality: the harmony of seemingly contradictory but actually complementary things. This perspective serves as the curatorial foundation for reexamining humanity's relationship with nature, spirituality, and contemporary socio-ecological realities.
Exhibition Extension at The Hari Hong Kong
In keeping with the spirit of expanding access to art, “Thresholds” is also at The Hari Hong Kong until March 31, 2026, presenting a selection of works by nine artists installed in the hotel’s public spaces. This collaboration continues White Cube’s partnership with The Hari through The Hari Art Prize, an annual arts program that began at The Hari London before expanding to Hong Kong.
