HBO’s acclaimed series ‘The White Lotus’ shifts its setting to Thailand for season 3, with Blackpink’s Lisa making her acting debut
After months of speculation, The White Lotus is returning to HBO for its highly anticipated third season in 2025.
Known for its sharp social satire, dark humour and cliffhanger twists, the acclaimed anthology series has garnered 23 Emmy nominations in the previous two seasons, with Jennifer Coolidge earning a repeat win for her performance.
The new season will continue to explore the lives of privileged vacationers and their complex interactions with the resort staff, focusing on how their dysfunctional interpersonal relations shape their experiences during their stay.
One of the many reasons for the show’s anticipated return is Lisa of the beloved K-pop girl group Blackpink making her acting debut this season. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming season.
Intrigue-inducing plot and locales
HBO has released two teasers on Instagram so far. As far as teasers go, they are truly curiosity-inducing. We’re talking iconic locations such as the Wat Paknam Temple in Thailand, bustling Bangkok roads, Thailand’s sublime beaches, vibrant nightlife and, of course, a luxurious resort around which the plot revolves. Lisa is seen warmly welcoming guests in her White Lotus uniform, saying, “Welcome to The White Lotus in Thailand ka,” hinting at her role as a receptionist named Mook (meaning pearl in Thai).
Blackpink’s Lisa’s acting debut
Lisa shared The White Lotus teaser to her Instagram story, adding to her fans’ excitement. Lisa hasn’t so far divulged any details about her character, but several media outlets who interviewed her have quoted her as saying she took acting classes to build her confidence. In these interviews, she also reportedly compared acting to shooting music videos, where facial expression is key.
It is not hard to imagine that for Lisa, who is of Thai heritage, filming this series in Thailand meant connecting to her roots. Lisa has never shied away from embracing her culture—the music video of her song Rockstar was also shot in Bangkok.

Star actors and clever satire
The White Lotus has become a fan favourite for its signature attributes: beautiful locations, star-studded cast and plot twists. This season is no exception. In the teaser, we see Leslie Bibb from Iron Man, Carrie Coon from The Leftovers, Christian Friedel from Downfall and Walton Goggins from Justified, along with The White Lotus season 1 veteran Natasha Rothwell.
Following its explorations in Hawaii and Sicily, this season will take viewers to Thailand, with scenes set in Bangkok and the stunning islands of Phuket and Koh Samui. The series’ creator Mike White once shared in an interview on HBO that the new season would take a satirical look at death, religion and spirituality, contrasting with the previous seasons, which focused on money and sex.
Fans can look forward to the series’ blend of dark humour, thrilling plot and unexpected twists, all while delving into the intricate dynamics between privileged guests and the local culture.
