Tom Holland is trending for all the right reasons—from Tom Hardy’s Venom wanting to ‘fight Spider-Man’ and advocating for mental health to protecting Zendaya from the paparazzi

Tom Holland is making headlines even for movies he hasn’t starred in. Yes, we’re talking about Tom Hardy expressing his desire to fight Spider-Man while promoting his latest film, Venom: The Last Dance, at the recent New York Comic Con. This has led to media and fan speculation about a possible Venom vs. Spider-Man confrontation in the future.

Hardy might be “manifesting” the fight scene with Holland’s Spider-Man, but meanwhile, Holland himself has confirmed that Spider-Man 4 will begin production next summer in a recent episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This news comes at a pivotal moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has seen a dip in box office success with recent releases like The Marvels (2023) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) underperforming at the box office.

Given this context, it’s no surprise that Marvel executives are keen to refocus their efforts on one of their most beloved and successful characters: Spider-Man. Here’s a closer look at why Tom Holland might just be the key to reinvigorating the MCU and why fans can’t get enough of him right now.

1. Spider-Man and Tom Holland: A long love story

Holland’s connection to Spider-Man isn’t just a role; it’s a lifelong dream come true. A viral video took fans back to when a young Holland, brimming with ambition, declared his desire to play the iconic superhero.  At 16 years old, he debuted in Hollywood in The Impossible (2012). During an interview at the Jameson Empire Awards 2013, when asked about what role he would like to play in the future, a young Holland had grinned and said, “Maybe Spider-Man in 10 years!”

Little did he know that this playful ambition would soon become a reality. In 2016, he debuted as the third Spidey in Captain America: Civil War. The following year brought his standalone film Spider-Man: Homecoming, making him the youngest actor to lead a role in the MCU. His cheeky British charm and relatability made him a fan favourite, leading to further roles in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and No Way Home (2021).

2. He has embraced different forms of masculinity through diverse roles

Holland has delved into various expressions of masculinity through diverse roles. In Billy Elliot: The Musical Live (2008), the then 12-year-old portrayed the title character after two years of ballet training, tap dancing and acrobatics. He brought to life a young dancer who defied societal expectations, passionately pursuing his dreams despite the traditional view of dance as a feminine art form.

In The Crowded Room (2023), Holland took on a complex character grappling with dissociative identity disorder, demonstrating that strength encompasses emotional openness and vulnerability, not just toughness.

Meanwhile, in the Spider-Man series, Holland’s Peter Parker showcases a modern interpretation of masculinity—one that balances strength with compassion, as he is not only a fighter but also a caring friend and partner.

3. Holland is raising awareness about mental health

Holland has been open about his mental health struggles. In August 2022, the actor decided to take a break from social media as the online opinions had become detrimental to his mental health. “I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online,” he said in an Instagram video. He also encouraged others to seek help, noting that while there is a damaging stigma surrounding mental health issues, asking for support should not be a source of shame. In June 2023, Holland announced that he would take a year-long break from acting to focus on his mental health, emphasising his commitment to well-being and self-care.

4. Holland opens up about alcoholism

In addition to addressing mental health, Holland is also raising awareness about alcohol-related issues through the launch of his non-alcoholic beer brand, Bero, this October. This initiative reflects his journey towards sobriety after recognising the detrimental impact of alcohol on his life. The actor has openly shared his struggles with drinking, revealing that he used to find it difficult to limit himself to just one beer. After participating in Dry January in 2022, he realised he needed to make a change and decided to cut out alcohol entirely.

5. He is a living “green flag” boyfriend

From shielding his MJ, Zendaya, from a swarm of paparazzi to proudly embracing his “short king” identity and attending numerous movie premieres to support her work, Holland exemplifies what it means to be a supportive partner. He embodies the qualities of a real-life Spider-Man—being a superhero isn’t just about saving the day; it’s about showing up for the ones you love every day.
