The Karl Lagerfeld in Macau, a part of the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort and one of the newest properties to open under SJM Resorts, celebrated its grand opening on June 10 with a rock-chic-themed evening—and something tells us the hotel’s namesake late fashion icon would have been proud

If Hong Kong seemed a little less bright the weekend of June 10, it’s because the city’s star power was in Macau for the grand opening of The Karl Lagerfeld, the world’s sole hotel tower boasting interiors designed by the late fashion icon it is named after.

The hotel’s opening ceremony was officiated by industry leaders and members of the Tatler community, including Timothy Fok, co-chairman of SJM Holdings and chairman of the board of directors of SJM Resorts.

Celebrities such as Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh (who took selfies with the guests), French singer Lou Doillon, entrepreneur Gigi Chao and supermodel Park Soo-joo paid tribute to the fashion legend while immersing themselves in the hotel’s offerings. Family members of the late founder of SJM Stanley Ho were present to mark the occasion, including Pansy, Maisy, Josie, Florinda, Orlando, Sabrina, Mario and Beatrice.

Pier Paolo Righi, CEO of The Karl Lagerfeld, said: “Karl spoke often about his fascination for Chinese culture and art. In this concept, he has combined elements from both East and West to make it his own unique style, design and creative expression. I can say without a doubt that he would have loved to be here with us today to see it come to life.”

Daisy Ho, chairman and executive director of SJM Holdings, and managing director of SJM Resorts, echoed Righi’s sentiments. “Lagerfeld’s “Europe-Meets-China’ interpretation encapsulates the very essence of Macau’s East-meets-West history. [We aim to] to push the boundaries of modern hospitality while honouring the rich heritage that underpins our foundation.”

And that they did: the lavish celebration dominated social media all weekend. Lagerfeld’s modern, monochromatic aesthetic was seen in everything from the culinary delights and a party at The Grand Pavilion to the dance and musical performances featuring Chinese percussion and cymbals.

With Macau now fully open, we know this is just the tip of the iceberg for the grandiose affairs in the city. Watch this space.
