Our astrologer, De Rui, tells us all what to expect as we wrap up the year

The energies riding into a new month are those of wide-eyed exploration. The New Moon in Sagittarius in the latter part of November was a call to discover new sources of optimism and what to put faith in, as well as who can expand our horizons. With Mercury and Venus joined together for the past three weeks – and for the next several to come – social interactions are easy-going and well-lubricated. People, including ourselves, seem to say the right thing at the right time and exchanges can truly be a joy. For the most part, the interest and understanding we feel from others is quite genuine, and communication can be open-ended without too many agendas.

Past the first ten days of December, an element of strategy comes into play. As planets move into Capricorn, circumstances may force us to choose between what to do and who to see. We may need to be more selective about the return on our time investments. On December 8, a Full Moon joining with Mars, exactly halfway through its retrograde, forms an emotionally volatile portal—a time when suppressed anger or resentment from the past can no longer be held down, and confrontations quickly ignite. Trust that your own emotions are valid at this time and that anything coming to a boil is healthy in the long run.

The middle two weeks of December facilitate more humble learning from those close to home and integral to our day-to-day lives. Energy comes now, not from absorbing big ideas, philosophies or making an impact on the world, but from participating on a much smaller scale (neighborhood gossip, sibling updates, local events) that can give a certain buzz and dynamism to even the most mundane kind of lifestyle. The December 21 Winter Solstice is a good time to gather with those in your immediate vicinity and to participate in shared rituals.

A new cycle begins on the December 23 New Moon in Capricorn. As another year winds down, we are going to be taking stock of how far we have come and what we have yet to build. Often there is no greater factor involved in shaping our legacy than our spouse/co-pilot/partner-in-crime, both in terms of their support for us but also in what their personal ambitions are for their own life.  Planetary alignments to the marriage asteroid Juno indicate a good time to hold your significant other close as well as to put your joined forces to use. If long-term goals aren’t clear, Mercury entering its final retrograde of the year on December 29 sets just the right tone for contemplation and deep reflection.

The Month by Sun Sign

This is potentially an expansive time of year, with plenty of kindred spirits and good people to share fun, adventure, and inspirational experiences with. Around the Full Moon on December 8, the mood music changes a bit, as your whims take you in different directions. After the first week of the month, others can voice their criticisms more openly, even if they don’t mean anything personal. Try to see it as helpful rather than hurtful. With more friction in the air, a passing flirtation with a new person in your orbit is possible. Planning for the long term may not always be appealing but a golden window of opportunity opens up after the December 23 Full Moon to take your future more seriously.

Inner resources can sustain you during the first part of the month, in particular with the support of abundance planet Jupiter, until December 20. Experiments and forays into spiritual pursuits or service projects can bring easier satisfaction and fulfillment than more intellectual activities can right now. In the middle part of the month, get involved in something locally or a random topic that happens to pique your curiosity, and you may be surprised. In fact, following any whims at that time could turn out to be rewarding. The New Moon on December 23 brings opportunities to develop the networks and alliances you need to serve longer term goals. It is unlikely that you will pass up the chance.

The Full Moon in your sign on December 8 brings a deeper appreciation of who you are and what sets you apart. It could be exactly the shot of confidence and support that you need right now, when others may not seem to be on the same page. There is more positive energy coming your way in the second half of the month, when the planet of abundance Jupiter comes back into dynamic alignment to offer its bolstering and expansive vibes. Important relationships can offer a feeling of being looked after and nurtured after December 19. Try not to take such blessings for granted, even if they operate in the background and don’t require much effort on your part.

There is currently a protective bubble cocooning you from the comings and goings of a chaotic world. Jupiter in harmony with your sign offers its abundance and beneficence even at a moment when other people are not particularly aligned with you, and whose behaviours may be downright mystifying. Around the time of the Gemini Full Moon, the mood music changes and you will have to come out of your bubble to deal more directly with challenges. The New Moon in Capricorn just before Christmas is a good time to set intentions around goals and achievements that can stand the test of time. As you head into a new year, experiment with what you want your legacy to be.

The month holds plenty of fun and adventure, even after the current optimistic atmosphere turns a bit more serious after the first week of December. The Full Moon on December 8 may carry some fireworks, and the whimsical ambience it creates during the middle two weeks of the month may lead you down some interesting paths. Following your curiosity may brings the possibility of random surprises and serendipity if we can manage to keep an open mind. Jupiter, the planet of expansion and abundance, comes into supportive alignment from December 20 onward. If you choose to set goals around long-term ambitions at the New Moon on December 23, doors can magically open.

A period of growth and stretching beyond your comfort zone continues through most of December right up until the Capricorn New Moon on December 23. At the moment, adventurous explorations of the mind or body are pushing you beyond the limits of practicality and earthy purposefulness. The middle two weeks of the month may be defined by the need to be more open and curious about your environment and the various types around you. There is something to learn from everyone, and kindred spirits are actually plentiful this month as the collective logic and feelings of worth take a practical turn in Capricorn. By the time New Year’s resolutions roll around, you will be feeling a lot more in your element.

December continues to be a social period for you as dynamic interactions continue to take place in your circles. The Full Moon in Gemini amplifies the desire to stay light and agile—among people, ideas, and interests—so that you can spread yourself around as much as possible. As Ceres, the asteroid representing nurturance, nourishment, and support, arrives in your sign after December 19, you can also emerge as a supportive figure for others to lean on. The only rain on your parade this month could be overly serious, ambitious types who seem to challenge your lead. Come the Capricorn New Moon on December 23, you will need to take a page from their playbook.

The gradual shift in energy to more inwardly directed, self-motivated Capricorn will be more palpable for you after the first week of December, bringing more like-minded people into your orbit. For the moment, Jupiter is ensuring that all is well by enhancing the strong vibes and deep intuitions you feel with others. The middle part of the month, however, activates the small mind in all of us—for better or for worse. If you indulge a little too much in gossip or drama, the New Moon on December 23 would be the time to set your sights higher. Have a game plan for how to move upwards and onwards with your personal ambitions.

Many happy returns to those of you celebrating birthdays during this expansive and optimistic period. Now is the time to gather around and indulge in whatever makes you content and gives a sense of hope and light. By the time the Full Moon is illuminated on December 8, the mood may deflate a bit as people disperse and pursue their own individual whims and interests. You, too, may need to step back and tackle some smaller issues that have been waiting in the queue. Jupiter’s return to fellow Fire sign Aries on December 20 brings fresh energy and enthusiasm. Goal-setting around the New Moon is a good idea even if there are much more fun things to do.

At certain points in December, other people may seem a bit too aimless and distracted for your tastes. For the most part, though, having Mercury and Venus in your sign after the first week portends strong support for your own social charms and bright ideas. Right on through the New Moon in your sign on December 23, you can enjoy the usual end-of-year rituals of taking stock and reflecting on the passage of time, as well as the resolutions and intention-setting that come with the imminent beginning of a whole new year. Enjoy this resonance with the collective, possibly even feelings of wholeness. The last days of the year are good for laying groundwork for your ambitions.

As with Sagittarius, you may feel the current dynamism deflate somewhat as the month progresses. However, for you, the disperse, curiosity-led energies in the middle part of December jive with your natural mental agility and hunger for experience. You can have some fun exercising different parts of your brain and taking a break from highfalutin topics or philosophising. Jupiter’s return to Aries on December 20 keep your holiday celebrations jovial and indulgent. Relationships can become a bigger source of support and nurturance as the month winds down. If you take your ambitions and personal goals seriously enough to make concrete plans, all kinds of doors can open up.

Your expansive mind and intuitions continue to be challenged both by the exuberant, exhausting energies in early December and the more scattered pursuits mid-month. Following any Full Moon insights after December 8 on how to live more and learn more could prove rewarding, especially while Jupiter’s luck and abundance spend their last few days in your sign until December 20. More like-minded, possibly introverted, souls can emerge in the last week of the month to lend a hand or offer support. At that point and into the new year, you will also be busy making good inroads or progress on long-held ambitions and goals. After all, grand visions and ideals don’t realise themselves.
