While an official release date has not been announced, director Hwang Dong-hyuk said it will likely be out by the end of 2023 or 2024

We finally have official news that Squid Game, the highly popular Korean drama-thriller, will be back for a second season after the streaming service confirmed the news in a statement

The highly anticipated second season will see the return of Gi-hun and the mysterious Front Man, according to director Hwang Dong-hyuk in the same Netflix release. He also teased that the man in the suit with ddakji may be back and that we will finally be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” Hwang wrote. “As the writer, director, and producer of Squid Game, a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show... Join us once more for a whole new round.”

The official announcement comes months after Hwang confirmed that a second season of the show was in the works in November last year.

At a screening and question and answer session in Los Angeles for the series in November, Hwang said to the Associated Press: “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice.”

“But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently,” he continued.

That said, Hwang admitted at that point that there were no concrete details yet about the second season of the show and Netflix, at that point, had yet to make an official announcement.

We did find out though from Hwang that lead actor Lee Jung-jae will be returning as his main character, Seong Gi-hun.

“I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this, Gi-hun will come back. He will do something for the world,” Hwang said.

Squid Game is a show that features a contest that brings in 456 players who are all in deep financial debt. The contestants are forced to play deadly children’s games in order to win a massive cash prize.

The first season debuted on September 17, 2021, with nine episodes and quickly gained a massive fanbase. In fact, the show reigned number one on Netflix’s top 10 most popular shows list for weeks and racked up over 3 billion minutes watched, according to Nielsen.

Netflix also reported in October last year that over 111 million subscriber households had at least sampled the South Korean drama since it premiered.

Netflix also shared that after seeing a sharp decline in subscriptions in the first half of 2021, it added 4.38 million subscribers from July through September to reach 213.6 million total subscribers worldwide.

A large number of these new subscribers can be credited to Squid Game so it’s safe to say that this news is certainly exciting.

That said, an official release date has yet to be announced. In past interviews, Hwang said he expects the new season towards the end of 2023 or in 2024 so it looks like there will still be a bit of a wait for fans.

Stay tuned as more details about the second season of the K-drama are revealed in the coming months.
