The highly-anticipated TV adaptation of Min Jin Lee’s novel, Pachinko has finally released its trailer. The upcoming drama of the same name will be released on Apple TV+ on March 25.

Pachinko chronicles the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in an indomitable quest to survive and thrive. Their story starts in South Korea in the early 1900s, which will be told through the eyes of Sunja, who triumphs against all odds. It juxtaposes her story with that of her grandson, Solomon in the 1980s.

In telling this multigenerational story, the drama will be in Korean, Japanese and English and will take place in South Korea, Japan and the US. The original novel is told in three parts, each from a different generation.

The series boasts a star-studded cast that includes Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung, Lee Min-ho, Minha Kim, Jin Ha, Anna Sawai, Soji Arai, Kaho Minami, Steve Sanghyun, Jung Eun-chae, Jung Woong-in, Han Joon-woo and more.

Kogonda who worked on the critically acclaimed film, Columbus and Justin Chon, who directed Blue Bayou both serve as executive producers and directed four episodes each while Kogonda helmed the pilot. Soo Hugh, who created and wrote the series also serves as showrunner.

“They say there are those projects that come along and change the very core of who you are as a filmmaker and a person. Undoubtedly, Pachinko is that project for me,” says Soo.

“Not only is this a story of my forebears, [but] it’s [also] my tribute to them—to all of the Sunja’s buried deep in all of our family’s history. It’s been an incredible honour to bring this series to life with this dedicated and gifted cast and crew,” she adds.

Upon its premiere on March 25, there will be three episodes and then followed by new ones every Friday until its conclusion on April 29.

The trailer starts off in South Korea in the early 1900s and we witness the birth of Sunja, a child “who will thrive” and when she becomes a young adult. It then transitions to a shot of older Sunja, played by Youn. From there, the trailer shows a montage of Sunja in three different stages of her life—as a child, teenager and elderly.

We then see Koh Hansu (Lee) and teenage Sunja meeting and eventually falling in love. Older Sunja recalls this and sheds a tear prompting her grandson, Solomon (Jin Ha) asks her if she’s okay. It ends with Lee saying, “Never look back, always forward” as another montage of all the characters from different generations cuts through.
