Fresh off Squid Game actor O Yeong-su’s Best Supporting Actor for Television win at the Golden Globes, the hit Netflix show is making history yet again at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

After being the first foreign-language series and the first Korean series to land an ensemble nomination in the entire SAG Awards history, Squid Game brought home the first award of the night for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series.

Actor Lee Jung-jae won the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series and described the moment itself as “truly huge”.

The TV show was also nominated for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Succession took home the award.

Breakout star Jung Ho-yeon who earned her first-ever acting nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, also won the award. In her speech, she said, “Thank you so much. I have sat many times watching many of you on screen, dreaming of becoming an actor. You made me dream and opened the doors for me. And I want to say, I love you my Squid Game crew.”

Since its premiere in September 2021, Squid Game has become a global sensation, becoming Netflix’s most-watched original series. It also became an awards darling, landing three Golden Globes nominations with O bringing home the supporting actor prize, three Critics Choice Awards nominations and one Gotham Award for breakthrough series—all of these the first for any Korean show.

Cast members Lee Jung-jae, Jung Ho-yeon, Park Hae-soo, Anupam Tripathi, Kim Joo-ryoung and director Hwang Dong-hyuk are all in attendance for the award show.

Squid Game’s historic nomination at the SAG Awards is a great follow up to Parasite’s success which won the 2020 SAG Award for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture—the first non-English language film ensemble to take home the top prize. Last year, Minari star Youn Yuh-jung also won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, a first for a Korean actress.

With all these nominations and awards, Squid Game is already looking to be a major contender at the Emmy Awards later this year.
