The music genius behind hit songs All for Us and Still Don't Know My Name, brings the hit series Euphoria to life through his genre-bending music

Labrinth has been busy dominating the music scene with his groundbreaking music, which combines a multitude of genres, in the hit show Euphoria. Following the successful return of the second season of Euphoria, the artist responsible for the creation of the show’s soundtrack has also been launched back into the spotlight.

Truly in a genre of his own, the singer-songwriter (whose real name is Timothy Lee McKenzie) takes inspiration from jazz, R&B, hip-hop and gospel music. Having grown up in a house where music was always played, the artist was exposed to a wide genre of music from a young age and as he said in an interview with Rolling Stone was “a sponge to all of these energies”.

Labrinth first caught the attention of the music world in 2010 when he produced rapper Tinie Tempah’s single Pass Out which topped UK charts.

Soon after, his prodigious songwriting was recognised by producer Simon Cowell, who signed him under his agency Syco in 2013. He was the only artist under the label who did not go through a music show then.

The UK-based artist has collaborated with the likes of Sia and Diplo and has produced many hit songs for artists such as Kanye West and Britney Spears. Though he has produced a fair share of hit songs and has had successful collaborations over the years, the artist has been severely underrated and has mostly flown under the radar in the world of mainstream pop. That is, until Euphoria came around in 2019. After the release of the hit series, the soundtrack for the show soon went viral on TikTok and has since put the artist in the spotlight.

In season two, the artist even makes a special cameo in episode four where he makes his debut as a gospel singer. Interestingly enough, one of the inspirations for this season's soundtrack was the iconic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’s “Oompa Loompa”. The distortion and reverb sounds inspired by “Oompa Loompa” can be heard this season on the track, Nate Growing Up.

Labrinth’s soul and synth-sounding music scores for Euphoria are unlike anything else we’ve ever heard in the world of pop. In a very surreal and raw way, the Euphoria soundtrack effectively encapsulates the highs and lows of the human experience. According to Labrinth, the music we hear on the Euphoria soundtrack is made completely based on his instinct. Though his production work is minimal, the results are otherworldly and simply effective in evoking and conveying strong emotions.

The dreamy synth-sounding Euphoria soundtrack is currently available for streaming on Apple Music and Spotify.
