The rapper will be the first South Korean performer to headline a major US festival

Barely a week after becoming the first BTS member to release a full-length solo album, BTS member J-Hope has made headlines again for another achievement—he will be closing out Chicago’s annual Lollapalooza show. This makes the rapper and lead dancer of BTS the first South Korean artist to headline a major US music festival.

J-Hope, whose real name is Jung Ho-Seok, is slated to close the four-day Lollapalooza festival with a main-stage performance on July 31, 2022, said Live Nation Entertainment in a statement.

The 28-year-old released his solo album Jack In The Box to much fanfare, following a series of solo mixtapes including his critically acclaimed 2018 release Hope World—which peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard 200, making him the highest-ranking solo Korean artist on the US album chart at the time.

Live Nation also announced that South Korean boy band Tomorrow X Together (which is under the same record label as BTS) will perform at Lollapalooza on July 30, marking their US festival debut.

Festival founder Perry Farrell said in a statement: "Their global audience speak different languages but possess an intense passion for their music.

"These are the superstars of the global phenomenon of K-Pop."

The announcement of J-Hope’s Lollapalooza performance comes shortly after the surprising announcement that BTS was taking a break from musical activities as a group to pursue solo projects. In an interview with Variety, J-Hope clarified that the group is “definitely” not on hiatus and will continue to “remain active”.
