Ian Chan from Hong Kong boy band Mirror will kick off his ‘Tears’ in My Sight solo concert on July 19. It’s the perfect time to revisit some of his notable songs
Best known as the lead singer of the wildly popular Canto-pop boy band Mirror, Ian Chan is adept at the art of capturing hearts with his emotive voice and all-rounded talent. Now the singer-songwriter is set to serenade his fans in a solo concert titled “Tears” in My Sight.
To be held at the AsiaWorld-Expo from July 19 to 25, the concert adopts the theme “tears” to invite audiences to explore the many meanings behind the universal experience of shedding tears—from sorrow and regret to joy and hope. The stage has reportedly been designed as whale-shaped as a nod to one of Chan’s acclaimed tracks Whale Fall (2020).
From captivating ballads to upbeat electro-pop, Tatler selects five of Chan’s most notable anthems to prepare for the concert.
1. Thank You Postman (2024)
As one of the three new singles released this year, Thank You Postman evokes a serene feeling of being with your loved one even if one is separated by physical distance. The lyrics celebrate the special bond between a long-distance couple as they pour their hearts out in a series of heartfelt letters.
2. Breathing with You (2022)
Chan composed this ballad for his grandmother who raised him to remind us of the importance of finding solace in someone’s arms amidst the frantic pace of everyday life. Resonating deeply with many listeners, the music video has been the most viewed among Chan’s solo tracks—and has so far gained 21 million views on YouTube since its release on Valentine’s Day in 2022.
3. Night Vision (2023)
Night Vision marks a bold shift for Chan as his first upbeat track with dance choreography. Drawing inspiration from nocturnal animals, the sleek electro-pop song delves into the contrasts between one’s public persona and private self through lyrics that convey the duality of human nature.
4. Whale Fall (2020)
This is the first work in which Chan both composed the music and wrote the lyrics. It is inspired by the natural occurrence of whale fall—a phenomenon where whale carcass drops to the ocean floor and provide sustenance for other marine life. The song explores the meaning of one’s willingness to self-sacrifice to help others succeed.
5. Vale, Mare Tranquillitatis (2023)
Chan collaborated with award-winning lyricist Wyman Wong for the first time in crafting this poignant ballad, Vale, Mare Tranquillitatis, which means “farewell, the sea of tranquillity” in Latin. The song conveys the importance of cherishing meaningful moments with loved ones, as we never know when our last time together may be.
