Taiwanese actor Wu Kang Ren and Palme d’Or winning director Hirokazu Kore-eda were among the celebs present at the Hong Kong Film Awards 2024, while local heartthrobs Jeffrey Ngai and Will Or enthralled the audience with their performances

This year’s edition of Hong Kong Film Awards, which celebrates local and Chinese language films, took place at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on April 14.

Before the ceremony started, stars—both local and international—brought plenty of glamour to the red carpet outside the centre. These celebs include Best Actress nominee and former Tatler cover star Jennifer Yu in Ralph Lauren; singer Panther Chan in Givenchy; Best Supporting Actress nominee Fish Liew in Celine, Best Actress contender Louise Wong in Boucheron jewellery and Omega watch; and model Angelababy in Gaurav Gupta couture.

Taiwanese model and actor Wu Kang Ren, who was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role as a drug addict in Fly Me to the Moon, drew loud cheers on the red carpet.

Moving on to the awards presentation, Yoyo Tse won Best New Actress  for Fly Me to the Moon and Nick Cheuk took home the Best New Director award for Time Still Turns the Pages. Both were given the awards by Carina Lau, looking resplendent in a Schiaparelli creation. “A professional actor should wait for their turn, wait for a good script, and most importantly, to have the patience [to wait for recognition],” said Lau onstage, recalling that she herself had to wait 21 years before she won Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2011.

Meanwhile, this year, the Best Actress award went to Jennifer Yu for her role as a journalist who discovers cases of abuse in an elderly care home in the movie In Broad Daylight. Sammi Cheng, who won last year in this category gave the award to Yu. Yu’s co-star in the same film, Rachel Leung, picked up Best Supporting Actress for playing a mentally disabled person. Leung, who won for the first time at the Hong Kong Film Awards, said: “I hope [my film will inspire] people to continue being good people.”

It was a strong line-up in the Best Actor category, with most names being established actors. Ultimately, it was Tony Leung who clinched the deal for his role in The Goldfinger. “I’m very happy because the last time I won this award was more than ten years ago,” Leung said online, while his wife Lau received the award on his behalf.

Best Film went to A Guilty Conscience, a courtroom drama in which a lousy attorney (played by comedian and Best Actor nominee Dayo Wong) vows to clear the name of a single mother (played by Louise Wong) wrongly charged with her daughter’s murder. Dayo gave a special shoutout to the film’s director Jack Ng for his dedication and commitment to legal accuracies in the film. “A Guilty Conscience didn’t win anything throughout the night. I would have dedicated my Best Actor award to him if I had won, but this last [Best Film] award is an even better result,” he said.
