As she models jewels from The World of Heidi Horton collection presented by Christie’s, the artist tells Tatler why she was surprised by her nomination and her future goals

Jennifer Yu’s debut film, Sisterhood, was only released in 2016, but the actress and former model has proved a force to be reckoned with, winning best new actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards (HKFA) for that role. Since then, she has been nominated several times for acting awards—most recently, an HKFA best supporting actress nod for her role in 2022 drama Far Far Away. She plays Melanie, one of the male lead’s five love interests, who each have a distinctive personality and attitude to love.

What was your reaction when you heard about your nomination?
I was overwhelmed with surprise and disbelief because I had thought roles that usually get nominated are those that involve a display of great emotion. To be recognised for this performance means a lot. I am grateful to those who voted for me and those who like the character.

How much do you identify with your character Melanie in Far Far Away?
A lot, actually. Melanie and I are both casual and flexible—we like things done quickly and efficiently. If I was wearing an undershirt and shorts underneath my costume, I wasn’t fussy about needing somewhere private to get changed. I think many women who work in the film industry are the same, because the work environment often lacks amenities and comfort.

What were some of the challenges of making the film?
My part was filmed in just three days; as you may imagine, there was no room for error, and we shot no more than three takes for each scene. Obviously if we had had more time, the final product would be even better; given the circumstances and small budget, we are extremely pleased with the warm reception we got from the critics and audience. There was also the challenge of filming in some of the most remote places in Hong Kong. My character lives in Sea Ranch—a round trip by ferry takes two hours, which added to the challenge of finishing filming on schedule. My other challenge was that the role involved long lines that had to be articulated quickly. Being four months pregnant at the time, which I think affected my ability to memorise my lines, did not help!

Who was your favourite actor when you were growing up?
Karena Lam, because she delivers such a nuanced performance. Even when the scene does not require intense emotions or drama, you can still see the inner world of the character she portrays. She communicates with her audience in a subtle way.

Who is your cinematic influence?
Fish Liew, who played my best friend in Sisterhood. Because she shares my passion for film, we quickly became best friends in real life. A talented actress, she has seen many films and approaches acting with her own ideas. I often seek her opinion on my performance or on scripts I receive.

What kind of roles do you wish to see more of in Asian cinema?
I wish to see in Asian cinema more films about women; there have been more and more western films with female leads in recent years. The shortage in Asian cinema obviously has to do with culture and the perceived inferior role of women in many Asian societies. It is important to change the narrative, literally.

What’s your dream role?
I have played a mother in the past, but I only realised the flaws in those performances after becoming one. Now that I have actual experience, I feel my portrayal would be better. Some people think such a role should be avoided because it is hard to have a breakthrough performance if you have children, but I believe there are many different types of mothers and personalities, so I welcome any opportunity to play one, especially one with a complex story.
