Be sure to make room on your calendar for these exciting things happening this month

Thanks to last month’s Art Basel, Art Central and their numerous after-parties, culture vultures have been painting the town red. Although “Art Month” has officially ended, there are still quite a few events to attend in Hong Kong.

From concerts and exhibitions, to an international sporting competition, screenings, festivals and more; you name it, April has it. So, if you’re eager to get out but don’t know where to go or what to do, keep scrolling for our recommendations for this month.

1. Creamfields

When: April 13-14 

Where: Central Harbourfront

What: One of the world’s most beloved dance music festivals is coming back to Hong Kong in April, and is bringing with it the coolest names in the business. Global acts such as Martin Garrix, Armin Van Buuren, Illenium and Zhu will headline the event, which will offer an extra stage this year for both days.

2. Hong Kong Rugby Sevens

When: April 5-7

Where: Hong Kong Stadium

What: Don’t miss the chance to go to the Sevens this year, as it will be the final time the competition will take place at the Hong Kong Stadium—before moving to the new Kai Tak Sports Park in 2025. On top of some epic action from the 15 men’s and women’s teams, attendees can also look forward to some exciting music acts, including reggae legends The Wailers, as well as Journey’s frontman Arnel Pineda.

3. The Wailers ‘Legend’ 40th Anniversary Tour

When: April 5

Where: AIA Vitality Park

What: The iconic reggae band The Wailers celebrates two significant milestones this year: the anniversary of Bob Marley’s groundbreaking 1984 album Legend and the release of the eagerly awaited movie Bob Marley: One Love. Lead by Aston Barrett Jr, who starred in the biopic, the Jamaican artists are bringing the celebrations to Hong Kong for a night that promises to be unforgettable.

4. Hong Kong Film Awards

When: April 14

Where: Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre

What: The Hong Kong Film Awards is set to return on April 14 at the Grand Theatre in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to celebrate the best locally produced films of 2023. The Hong Kong Film Awards Association announced its nominations across 19 categories, which includes Tony Leung, Louise Wong, Kay Tse and more. A total of 50 films are nominated this year, which is a significant increase from 33 films last year—a great reason to stay tuned and keep the awards in mind.

5. Earth Day residency at Eaton

Where: Eaton HK, 380 Nathan Road, Jordan

What: For Earth Day, Eaton is partnering with National Geographic Explorers to delve into the hefty topic of climate action through the lenses of indigenous preservation and archipelago stories. Over a week, the hotel will welcome workshops for every age, a photography exhibition featuring frontline and indigenous youth asked to capturing their regions with loaned cameras, as well as the screening of the César-nominated documentary Bigger than Us (2021), followed by a panel discussion and a DJ set by Local Sun.

6. Bad Times Disco’s Record Store Day

When: April 26

Where: Bad Times Records, Heath, Tsim Sha Tsui

What: For the first time ever, Bad Times Disco is bringing its Record Store Day to Hong Kong. Aimed to celebrate the culture of independently owned record stores, the event will offer vinyl sets from Bad Times Disco residents and guests.

7. M+ at Night: Black and White Discoteca Affair

When: April 12

Where: M+ Museum, West Kowloon Cultural District

What: Black-and-white photography has a timeless aesthetic, while groovy music dissolves our sense of time. What happens when we pair the two? In April, M+ will collaborate with the team behind art and music festival Shi Fu Miz to bring an exciting lineup of activities to grounds of the museum of visual culture. It will be the occasion to show up at the iconic venue dressed in monochrome colours. Make sure to enjoy a tour of the headlining exhibition titled The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Noir & Blanc—A Story of Photography, which offers different perspectives to understand black-and-white image-making; as well as dance to the sound of international and local DJs such as DJ Pablo Valentino and Xiaolin.

8. Tai Kwun in Bloom

When: April 4-7

Where: Tai Kwun

What: Spring has sprung at Tai Kwun’s flower market, which transforms the whole Parade Ground into a veritable garden. This floral-focused event ticks all the boxes: it’s family-friendly, Instagrammable, and puts sustainability at the forefront of its celebrations. Over a dozen handpicked local brand partners are set to join the fête, with lovely workshops, botanical-inspired bites and offerings available.
