Some of Hollywood's most enduring love stories began on set, proving that sparks can fly under the spotlight
In the modern workplace, romance is hardly a rarity. Recent reports suggest nearly 80 per cent of US workers have experienced or are open to an office romance. And where better for sparks to fly than Hollywood’s glamorous, high-stakes “office” of soundstages and film sets? The chemistry, the proximity, the shared passion—the atmosphere is ripe for romance.
But film sets are fleeting by nature, and many on-set love stories end with the wrap party. Yet, some couples defy the odds, turning on-screen chemistry into enduring off-screen partnerships. From their first scene together to a lifetime of love, here are some of Hollywood’s most successful romances that started after meeting on set. The relationship may not have been instant but the spark started while at work.

1. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem

The Spanish actors met on the set of Jamón Jamón in 1992 and reunited for Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008, which led to their dating. They married in the summer of 2010 in the Bahamas and have two children. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem have since starred in two more films together and have his and her Oscar Awards for Best Supporting Actor/Actress. They continue to prove how well they can balance their professional and personal lives.
2. Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes

Ryan Gosling has a habit of dating his costars, from Sandra Bullock (Murder by Numbers) to Rachel McAdams (The Notebook). His infatuation with The Place Beyond the Pines costar Eva Mendes, however, stuck. They have been together since 2011 and share two daughters. The pair have been notoriously private, with Mendes only recently confirming that they got married in 2022.
3. Freddie Prinze Jr and Sarah Michelle Gellar

Talk about couple goals! Sarah Michelle Gellar met Freddie Prinze Jr in 1997 when they were shooting I Know What You Did Last Summer. She was 21 and he was 22. Gellar even had a cameo in Prinze’s hit movie, She’s All That (2009). They started dating in 2000, got engaged in 2001, and married a little over a year later. The pair continued to work together, notably as love interests Fred and Daphne in the Scooby-Doo films.
4. Hugh Dancy and Claire Danes

Hugh Dancy met Claire Danes on the set of Evening in 2006 and quickly fell in love. Early in their relationship, Dancy attended an ornament-making party that Danes organised. When she saw the cowboy paper doll ornament that Dancy made, she was all in. They married in 2009 and have three children together.
5. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander

The Light Between Oceans (2014), a romance drama about a couple who mans a lighthouse and finds an infant baby, was a conducive setting for romance. Swedish actress and former ballerina Alicia Vikander met her future husband Michael Fassbender during the shoot. They married in a private ceremony in 2017. Vikander has spoken publicly about the effects of pregnancy loss—though now she and Fassbender have two sons. The family lives in Portugal full-time.

6. Kit Harington and Rose Leslie

The Game of Thrones costars began dating on and off in 2011 and later announced their engagement via The Times’ Forthcoming Marriages section in 2017. They got married in Aberdeenshire, Scotland—Leslie’s hometown; her father is the Chieftain of the Aberdeenshire branch of the Scottish Clan Leslie. They have two children, a son born in 2021 and a daughter born in 2023.
7. Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer

Having sexy vampires creates a favourable atmosphere for romance it seems. Anna Paquin started dating True Blood costar Stephen Moyer since the series pilot in 2007. They said they felt the spark from the first chemistry test. The pair announced their engagement in 2009 and married a year later; Paquin gave birth to fraternal twins in 2012.
Moyer and Paquin still work together occasionally. For instance, he directed his wife in the 2022 drama A Bit of Light.
8. Adam Brody and Leighton Meester

Teens of the 2000s screamed for joy when Seth Cohen and Blair Waldorf got together. The OC and Gossip Girl were created by the same producers, so Adam Brody and Leighton Meester actually met in passing in 2007. However, they officially got to know each other in 2010 when they were filming The Oranges. Rumours that they were dating started in 2013—the same year they got engaged. They married in 2014 and have two children.
The couple are extremely tight-lipped about their relationship, though they've worked on several projects together. However, they have said that they’re each other’s soulmates. In January 2025, their house was one of the homes destroyed by the Palisades Fires.

9. Saoirse Ronan and Jack Lowden

Irish star Saoirse Ronan and Scottish actor Jack Lowden met on the set of Mary Queen of Scots. She played the title character while he was charming as Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. While they’ve kept their relationship low-key, Lowden hinted at their engagement on Instagram in 2023. They married in secret in Edinburgh in July 2024.
10. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

The power couple played superhero love interests Hal Jordan and Carol Ferris in Green Lantern, which was shot in 2010 and released in 2011. They started dating that year, after they split from their respective partners. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds wed in an intimate ceremony in 2012 and now have four children.
