The upcoming Netflix series will be centred on the origins of the fan-favourite Bridgerton royal, Queen Charlotte

If it’s not enough that there are still two, binge-worthy Bridgerton seasons in the works, then fans of the hit Netflix series will certainly delight over the news that a prequel is in the pipeline, too.

The spin-off series will be centred on a young Queen Charlotte (currently portrayed by Guyanese-British actress Golda Rosheuvel), following her rise as a royal and her marriage to King George III, and how it led to a pivotal moment in Bridgerton’s England.

Besides the Queen, the prequel will reveal the origin stories of two other fan favourite characters: Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) and Lady Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell).

A Star-Studded Cast

As to who will star in the show, names have already been announced. India Ria Amarteifio, a 20-year-old British actress, takes the lead as a young Queen Charlotte, while Arsema Thomas will make her TV debut as a young Lady Danbury. Rosheuvel, Andoh and Gemmell will also reprise their roles.

The young King George will be played by Corey Mylchreest, who’s also starring in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. His megalomanic mother, Princess Augusta, who seems to be the main antagonist of the upcoming prequel, will be portrayed by Michelle Fairley—a casting decision that will be welcomed by those who enjoyed the actress in her role as Lady Catelyn Stark in Game of Thrones.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child star Sam Clemmett will play a young Brimsley, aka the Queen’s right hand man, joining other notable cast members: The Witcher’s Richard Cunningham, who plays Lord Bute; Tunji Kasim as Adolphus; and Cyril Nri as Lord Danbury.

The prequel will be produced by Netflix and Shondaland, and written by Shonda Rhimes herself. It will offer something new to both fans of Bridgerton and the bestselling book series by Julia Quinn that it’s adapted from, as Queen Charlotte was written solely for the screen and does not appear in Quinn’s series.

The character is inspired by the real-life Queen Charlotte, a German princess who became queen of Britain and Ireland after marrying King George III in 1761. Bridgerton’s reimagined version of the Queen boasts cunning and wit, as well as a penchant for flamboyant wigs, extravagant ballgowns and gigantic jewels—all of which have made her win many viewers over.

“Many viewers had never known the story of Queen Charlotte before Bridgerton brought her to the world,” said Netflix head of global TV Bela Bajaria on the upcoming series. “I’m thrilled this new series will further expand her story and the world of Bridgerton.”
