Online streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime have revolutionised how we consume movies. Both platforms provide a diverse array of content from different countries. For Filipino filmmakers, these applications have become vital parts of their lives, as the latter provide avenues for recognition, cultural preservation, and industry growth.
Just recently, some films from the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) were uploaded to these platforms. Becky and Badette, GomBurZa, and Rewind are on Netflix, while Firefly is currently on Amazon Prime.

1. Crying Ladies
Mark Meily’s 2003 film Crying Ladies follows the story of Choleng (Angel Aquino), Rhoda (Hilda Koronel), and Sharon Cuneta (Stella), who work as professional mourners. As a new assignment approaches, Choleng faces a moral crisis while Rhoda ponders whether she should pursue acting once more. Stella, for her part, hopes to get custody of her son back.
2. Road Trip
Released on Netflix on May 14, 2024, the film Road Trip follows friends Janice de Belen, Gelli de Belen, Carmina Villaroel, and Candy Pangilinan as they talk about life, obstacles, and friendship on the road.

3. I Am Not Big Bird
In Victor Villanueva’s 2024 film, I Am Not Big Bird, we follow a 30-something-year-old virgin, ‘Big Bird’ (Enrique Gil), who feels depressed after his girlfriend turns down his marriage proposal. Big Bird and his friends head to Thailand, and a peculiar chain of events ensues.
4. Hello, Love, Goodbye
Cathy Garcia-Sampana’s 2019 film Hello, Love, Goodbye tells the story of Joy (Kathryn Bernardo), a struggling Filipino worker and Ethan (Alden Richards), a bartender, who attempt to reconcile their respective careers and feelings for each other in Hong Kong.

5. Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan
Chito S. Roño’s Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan (2023) is based on Bob Ong’s 2010 mystery novel of the same name. The story follows Gilberto “Galo” Manansala (Joshua Garcia), a student who visits his late grandmother’s home in the province.
6. Deleter
In Mikhail Red’s horror movie Deleter, we see an online content moderator, Lyra (Nadine Lustre), deal with anxiety and trauma as she experiences paranormal activities after deleting a suicide video made by her co-worker.

7. Lingua Franca
Lingua Franca (2019) follows a transwoman (Isabel Sandoval) who seeks to establish residency in the US. She develops a romantic relationship with the grandson of the elderly woman she provides care for.
