As someone constantly in the public eye, actress and entrepreneur, Liza Soberano aims to stay true to her authentic self

Liza Soberano, actress, entrepreneur, and children's rights advocate is one to slip on something chic and comfortable (rather than something en vogue yet uncomfortable). Although she has been keeping herself busy even while out of the limelight, Soberano always knows how to put together an ensemble that speaks to her—and this has earned her a spot in Asia's Most Influential: Style 2021 list.

What does style mean to you?

Style is a form of self-expression. Clichè as it may sound, we are all like books, full of emotions, history and knowledge. The cover is used to convey or express our story to potential readers, hoping people would take notice and eventually appreciate them.

Describe your personal style?

It really depends on my mood and what I’m dressing for. I suppose as an artist I’m constantly thinking of ways to look different and be different for the people who follow and support me. Sometimes I feel like dressing up very elegant, sometimes I feel a little bit tomboy-ish. But, mainly, I think my personal style is more girl next door (if that is even a style). I like dressing simple—in a pair of jeans, sneakers and a nice shirt. Sometimes you’ll catch me in a nice flowy floral dress or a cute skirt. Lately, I’ve been really into business casual.

Why do you love fashion? How does dressing up make you feel?

Honestly, I feel like I love looking at fashion more on other people than I care for applying it to myself. I love looking at beautiful things, I mean, who doesn’t? But I don’t like pressuring myself to look or dress a certain way for the sake of others opinions. I honestly couldn’t really be bothered. But I do love having a stylist who can transform me anytime, into anything or any style we want.

Who is your style icon? Why?

I’ve always adored Audrey Hepburn’s classic style. I guess it's also cause I wish I were from that era.

Lately, I’ve been in love with Zendaya and Anya Taylor-Joy’s style. Both of them are styled by Luxury Law [Law Roach] who I think is a genius at capturing people’s essence and identity through his styling. I also love Blackpink's style. I can’t choose one because they’re all so different but cohesive at the same time. If I had three wishes, one would be to have their wardrobe!

How do you select what to wear? Are there any personal rules that you follow?

I must be comfortable at all times. I don’t care how pretty or great something looks on me. If I feel like it could possibly lead to a wardrobe malfunction, or if it doesn’t allow me to move comfortably, you are not getting me to wear it.

Any go-to, favourite brands?

My favourite brands of all time are Chanel and Dior. I also like YSL and Balenciaga when I’m feeling a bit more trendy and cool.
