At its New Year’s Eve Gala, The Peranakan Association’s president Peggy Jeffs shared the association’s programme line-up for the year ahead
Since Peggy Jeffs was elected as the first female president of The Peranakan Association in June last year, the proud Nonya and her committee members have been hard at work sharing their passion for the Peranakan culture through the association’s activities, from talks on Peranakan jewellery, bead work and embroidery and play reading in Baba Malay, to supporting the programmes of the NUS Baba House.
And the association’s New Year’s Eve Gala at the Island Ballroom of Shangri-La Singapore was yet another occasion to showcase the rich Peranakan culture. Before dinner, guests had the opportunity to peruse a bazaar featuring Peranakan jewellery, batik from Indonesia, as well as Nonya kueh.
In her opening speech, Peggy shared that there will be a full line-up of programmes to look forward to in 2023. Among them, the reopening of the Peranakan Museum in February, and the Peranakan Convention, which will be taking place in Malacca in November.

What’s even more exciting is that the year 2023 will see The Peranakan Association promoting the kebaya. Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand and Indonesia will jointly nominate the traditional women’s dress for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The submission is in March, with the result expected to be announced at the end of 2024.
The evening featured performances by The Peranakan Voices and Flamenco Sin Fronteras, before eight of the best-dressed guests who channelled the evening’s theme of Mask-querade were announced. Everyone later rang in the new year with a bang!
