Interested in learning more about the incredible artistry of ceramics? Tahanan Pottery has an incredible lineup of talks and workshops from October 15-December 4, 2022

You may have heard of Tahanan Pottery. Located in the Scout area of Tomas Morato in Quezon City, this humble shop and studio proved itself as a haven for many professional and burgeoning potters, especially during the pandemic. Rita Badilla-Gudiño, a former fine arts student herself, is Tahanan Pottery's program director, teacher, and—in many ways—a pioneer. "A lot of pottery studios sprouting around the country these days are either headed by my former students in Fine Arts or in Tahanan Pottery," she says proudly.

This month, Badilla-Gudiño continues her advocacy by helming the Tahanan Pottery October Fiesta. It will run for approximately two months, from October 15 to December 4 this year. There are talks, demonstrations, and workshops that anyone can join!

The first stop at the October Fiesta is Sulyap Gallery, where the Sining Tahanan 2022 is currently taking place. This is a group exhibition featuring works of some of Tahanan's emerging artists and teachers, as well as from other pottery communities. Those who have yet to be exposed to the practice are likely to be pleasantly surprised as Sining Tahanan carries more than just plates, cups, and vases. Incredible sculptural art is available for sale, many of which will leave one in awe at the complexity of their design.

Artist Talks and Demonstrations by Siegrid Bangyay, Alvin Tan Teck Heng, and Mark Valenzuela will also welcome guests.

Coming from Sagada, Siegrid Bangyay can help you develop your individual pottery style at her demonstration, talk and workshop, happening on October 16.

Alvin Tan Teck Heng, who hails from Singapore and is a multi-awarded ceramic artist will be delving into surface deco "and the lifelong pursuit of ceramics" at this scheduled talk on November 16. There will be an artist talk and demonstration in the morning from 10 am to 12 pm, followed by a workshop in the afternoon from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Lunch and snacks will be included in the fees. While everyone is invited to attend the talk and demonstration, it is encouraged at only those who are comfortable throwing 2 kilograms of clay will attend the workshop.

Finally, the last artist talk and demonstration will be headed by Mark Valenzuela, a Filipino artist based in Australia. On December 4, Valenzuela will explain his ideas on how to conceptualise space for a ceramics art exhibition. This will run from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and will be followed by a four-hour workshop starting at 1:30 pm.

A part of the proceeds generated from the talks, demonstrations, and workshops will naturally go towards sustaining the pottery community; specifically, the Damilian potters of San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, who share a deep-rooted heritage in the art of ceramic making. Proceeds will help them utilise a stoneware clay made from raw materials sourced solely from their region, as formulated through Badilla-Gudiño's Luad Ilocos Ceramic Art Project.
