From a celestial-themed installation to a carpet ‘handwoven’ by robots, this year’s Art Week celebrations at The Peninsula saw the hotel ramping up its art initiatives, in partnership with V&A
On March 24, Tatler attended the highly anticipated Art Week celebrations at The Peninsula Hong Kong, hosted by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels’s CEO Benjamin Vuchot and Melissa Buron, the director of collections and chief curator at The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A).
Since its inception in 2019, The Peninsula’s Art in Resonance initiative has aimed to empower mid-career and emerging artists by commissioning them to create public works with comprehensive curatorial and logistical support. This year, the hotel elevated its programme even more by collaborating with the V&A, the world’s largest museum of applied arts, decorative arts and design.
The event dedicated to Art Week showcased a stunning array of installations, including local artist Phoebe Hui’s celestial-themed installation, Lunar Rainbow, which created a striking visual experience at the hotel’s façade. In the lobby, Shanghai-based textile artist Lin Fanglu transported guests to a world of intricate textures and colours through her installation, She’s Bestowed Love. Meanwhile, new media artist Chris Cheung, widely known as H0nh1m, welcomed visitors to The Flow Pavilion, an immersive installation located at The Verandah. In this art piece, for which Cheung has collaborated with Tai Ping Carpets, the artist has used robots to create intricate patterns on the carpet, blending technology with traditional hand craftsmanship.

Vuchot emphasised the hotel’s commitment to cultural experiences, saying: “Creating memorable experiences is what we strive to do at The Peninsula [Hong Kong]. Since the hotel opened in 1928, it has always been a place where the local and international communities come to enjoy cultural experiences. Since 2019, we have been committed to placing artwork at the centre of these experiences with our Art in Resonance programme.”
VIPs such as Aron Harilela, Claire Hsu, Carol Murray, Tina Leung and Joanna Hotung attended the party.
