Art collectors and enthusiasts once again assemble in The Link, Ayala Center for Art Fair Philippines, where different elements of the contemporary art world come together for viewings, exhibitions, and special projects.
For its 10th year, Art Fair Philippines offers an organically designed setup divided into floors and partitions—a beehive-like structure compared to the usual vast open space. This allows the audience to savour and appreciate the pieces more intimately. Tatler is one of the few to experience such, being exclusively invited to explore the vernissage.

The Silverlens Gallery exhibit

Upon entering the 5th floor where the first 20 exhibitors are located, Silverlens Gallery, Cayón, and Tarzeer Pictures welcomed us with open arms. Among the works in these exhibits is Nutribun at Pene (2022) of Silverlens, one of Alfredo Esquillo’s pieces for his Bread and Circus solo exhibition last year. It aims to convey that unless we learn from our past, we cannot chart our destined future with hope.

Peter Zimmerman’s works in Nunu Fine Art also stood out with their colours, like Brick (2018) and Faded (2021), both oil on dibond (aluminium) pieces. Through colour and epoxy, he tests his innovativeness and comes up with works that best evoke a sense of distortion.

Rosario Bitanga, a renowned female abstractionist, also got to showcase her works through Miguel Rosales, an architect and art consultant. Modernist Romulo Olazo, known for his skill in printmaking like collagraphy and serigraphy, had his works presented through Paseo Art Gallery, together with works by Nena Saguil, Mauro Malang Santos, and more. They are proof that post-war modernism continues to maintain a high spot in tiers.

To create sometimes one needs to destroy, and that is what Jade Suayan of the Secret Fresh Gallery believes in. With the use of bright colours and vivid imagery of elements scattered throughout the space, she shows how impactful destructive experiences can be. It gives the message that no matter how bad an experience can be in life, it can still offer a different perspective and help a person grow.

Located on the 6th floor is one of the tribute galleries of the fair, the Avellana Art Gallery. Together with the Liongoren Gallery on the 7th floor, they pay tribute to Albert Avellana and Norma Liongoren who recently passed away. Their memories, however, live on forever through their works and pieces—proof that art is and will always be timeless.
