Members of the Tatler community came out in full swing for The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ fundraiser ball that took place inside Lyric Theatre on November 25.

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ (HKAPA) annual ball welcomed the city’s movers and shakers, as well as some of the biggest names in the arts scene. Guests included Joe Wong Chi-cho, Hong Kong's permanent secretary for culture, sports and tourism, Bling Empire: New York’s Tina Leung, as well as Alan Chan and Elly Lam. Emceed by Charmaine Ho and Jonathan Cheung, it was an evening of inspiring performances and appreciation for the performing arts.
HKAPA director Gillian Choa expressed her gratitude to guests. “Your every gift is essential to support our students’ development and help us fulfil our mission of cultivating performers and technical artists in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area,” she said, to deafening cheers from the crowd.
For the ball, the Lyric Theatre was transformed into the backstage of a theatre, complete with captivating lighting effects from projectors arranged around the room and on the ceiling to highlight the stage at the centre. As guests were ushered to their seats for dinner, they caught glimpses of performers getting ready.

The evening kicked off with a series of performances from the HKAPA’s students, including scores from American composer Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Pas de Deux from the classic French ballet Le Corsaire and the 1954 musical There’s No Business like Show Business. Performers from the School of Chinese Opera and the School of Music followed suit, with a blend of classical and modern acts. Perhaps the most memorable and unexpected performance of the night was when HKAPA council member Raymond Chan took to the stage to perform The Butterfly Lovers, a Chinese classic, on a guzheng (or a Chinese plucked zither).
A charity auction, led by auctioneer extraordinaire Jin Ling, offered items like jewellery from Mouawad; guests bid with enthusiasm, and at the end of the night, over HK$6 million was raised for the HKAPA’s scholarships and future initiatives.
