The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) celebrated its 50th anniversary in style with a spectacular gala and auction on June 18 at the Regent Hong Kong. The event, chaired by Tatler’s Asia’s Most Influential honouree Winnie Chiu, brought together more than 400 music lovers, philanthropists and supporters of the orchestra to commemorate this significant milestone.
Founded in 1974, the HK Phil has blossomed into one of Asia’s foremost symphony orchestras. Over the past five decades, it has captivated audiences with its world-class performances, innovative programming and unwavering commitment to artistic excellence, with the past 12 years being under the dynamic leadership of music director Jaap van Zweden.

The 50th anniversary gala was a testament to the HK Phil’s remarkable journey. Once guests were seated, Chiu took to the stage to share the personal significance of this important milestone: “I am deeply grateful and profoundly humbled by all of your unwavering support. Going to a HK Phil concert is like going home for me. The Hong Kong Phil is extremely close to my heart as it was the first board role, [taken on in] my 20s,” she said to applause.
As one of Hong Kong’s most beloved and respected cultural institutions, the orchestra has been a driving force in promoting classical music, fostering artistic talent and enhancing the city’s reputation as a global centre for the arts.
The evening featured a mini concert featuring HK Phil concertmaster Jing Wang, principal viola Andrew Ling and principal cello Richard Bamping alongside guest pianist Colleen Lee, among several dazzling performances peppered throughout the night.
The gala also included a live auction, where attendees had the opportunity to bid on exclusive experiences and items, from diamonds to office massages and even a private lecture by renowned Beethoven scholar Daniel Chua, chair professor of music at the University of Hong Kong.
The auction generated significant funds, which will be used to support the orchestra’s extensive education and community outreach programmes, ensuring that the HK Phil’s musical legacy continues to touch the lives of generations to come.
