Winnie Chiu is the steady hand at the helm of Dorsett Hospitality International

Profile

Since joining her family business Dorsett Hospitality International as president and executive director in 2010, Winnie Chiu has grown the company’s portfolio from 11 hotels in seven cities to over 60 hotels in 30 cities.

Despite the challenges faced by the hospitality industry throughout the world, Chiu has continued to steer Dorsett through the storm. The firm was one of the first to join the Hong Kong government's hotel quarantine scheme in the early days of the pandemic and has since become something of a pioneer in the space, launching multiple programmes to keep guests comfortable—and sane—during their stay. In December 2021 the group also opened Dorsett Gold Coast on Broadbeach Island in Australia and Dao by Dorsett, a long-stay aparthotel brand in London—no mean feat in the midst of a pandemic.

A firm believer in work-life balance, Chiu says she advocates for creating good habits and values, and also encourages her staff to spend time with their family. She also feels particularly strongly about bridging the gap in female representation and expectations of them in the workplace: “As female leaders, we tend to be naturally more empathetic, which encourages greater collaboration,” she says.

Chiu is also the chairman of Agora Hospitality Group and a Justice of the Peace appointed by the Hong Kong government. The hotelier often speaks of her passion for the arts and is the chairman of Hong Kong Art School and joint vice-president of the Society of the Academy for Performing Arts.

“I love to meet people and learn about new ideas and technology. It’s exciting to be able to open doors for entrepreneurs and start-ups to help them grow and evolve.”
