8 Must-see art exhibits this June: Bernardo Pacquing at Silverlens, Korean comics at The M, and more

INK Fest, Ang INK’s art fair, will also take place on June 30, coinciding with the Ayala Museum’s Free Museum Day. In mid-July, the group’s award-winning illustrators will give special talks to celebrate National Children’s Book Day.

For his fifth solo exhibition at the gallery since being represented by Silverlens in 2014, Bernardo Pacquing continues to experiment with abstraction as a building activity in which materials are stripped of their original meaning and transformed into Causal Loops.

The act of looking back now, from halfway across his life, has dredged up memories of Pacquing that have found themselves in the new works. There are a total of 25 works in the show, comprising four large works, including an 8.5-foot tall by 30-foot wide painting composed of five panels, ten cardboard works from his ongoing Brown Study series, six new sculptures, and a new series of five small works.

Causal Loops will be on view from June 11 to July 13 at Silverlens Manila.

From June 20 to August 10, discover the evolving world of Korean webtoons at the K-Comics World Tour at the Groundspace Gallery, The M in BGC.

Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST) and the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), the event highlights webtoons’ impact on Korea’s entertainment industry, featuring popular K-drama adaptations like What's Wrong with Secretary Kim and Red Sleeve.

Same House, Different Time is one of the art exhibits to look forward to this June. It features the works of Lexygius Calip, Joey Cobcobo, Eugene Jarque, Lynyrd Paras, Ryan Rubio, and Mac Valdezco at Avellana Art Gallery in Pasay City.

The show is a tribute to the gallerist and former president of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines, Albert Avellana. He has devoted more than 25 years of his life to the arts and supporting young Filipino artists. A beloved friend and familiar face for many in the art scene, Avellana is known for being an innovative and creative genius, having mounted and curated many exhibits ahead of their time.

The six artists featured in the exhibit have all, at one time or another, called Albert’s gallery their home and started their artistic journey under his care. It tells the story of how one’s generosity of spirit and voice of encouragement, having opened his home to others, can make a difference in someone’s life.

Filipino pop artist Sean Go presents his latest art exhibition, Victory Road, at Secret Fresh Gallery, on view until June 14. The exhibition evokes a specific childhood memory: the final route in the Pokémon games before facing the Elite Four and conquering the Pokémon world.

The exhibit delves into these iconic memories and transcends mere nostalgia. It serves as a metaphor for life’s journey, remembering that every person has a unique “victory road” to complete. “What an apt metaphor for life, right?” says Go. “This exhibit is about celebrating our shared experiences and the unique paths we take.”

The UP Fine Art Gallery, together with the UP Diliman Gender Office, the UP College of Fine Arts Student Council, and the UP Diliman Architecture Student Council, celebrates Pride Month with Kulayan ang Kalayaan: Queer Art Fair and Exhibit 2.0. It’s one of the many art exhibits the gallery is holding this June. It will showcase the incredible talent of their local artists as part of the UP Diliman Pride 2024 festivities. 

It will feature the works of Iana Laurel, Jehu Sabado, Via Bulaon, Jason Cedric Andres, Romelyn Esteves, Teresa Isabel Avila, Jovin Dean Labastera, Simone Therese Dandan, Jhaylorde Parungao, Nicholas Selwyn Jalea, Lyresh Ann Deniña, Naomi Alexis Laviña, Jermain Kirsten Apostol, Norhana Ugking, Jazmin Navalan, Justine Clark Saavedra, Norman Deanu Ambrosio, Mark Anthony Tisado, Jose Anton Miguel Alcala, Milan Jamito, Artina Pourkaramy Lighvan, Sheanne Kate Abapo, Miguel Fermin, and Christine Sena.

Additionally, Kidlat Tahimik’s Indio-Genius! Tatlong Alamat ng Tagumpay is open for viewing until July 10 at the Atrium.

In celebration of his life and art, Gallery Genesis will launch the book Glenn Bautista: An Artist Drowning in Visions, written by Igan D’Bayan. The book reveals how a great artist came to be—through his life, upbringing, inspiration, and beliefs. 

The simultaneous exhibition runs until June 30. Bautista’s abstract pieces are described as coming straight out of a dream—enigmatic, fluid, captivating, and thought-provoking.

“Love Letters to Betsy is a homage to the late Betsy Westendorp, an artist beloved by many who had developed a deep relationship with Provenance Art Gallery,” says curator Stephanie Frondoso. The display, part of the gallery’s many art exhibits, features Westendorp’s oeuvre from June 15 to July 8, with works ranging from atmospherographs and landscapes to flowers, houses, and portraits—of subjects in Spain and the Philippines.

Guests will also get a peek into the artist’s studio and an intimate look at the process and materials of a celebrated icon.
