What exactly makes for “the best”? To us, it is about what is most relevant to each unique situation, space, and purpose.

Each nomination had to be conceptualised and built or opened in the last five years, placing more emphasis on the poignancy of each project.

We are opening submissions of entries to give architects and designers an opportunity to showcase their work and be awarded in this year’s THDA.

To submit your entry for an award category, please provide the following details:

• Category of your Design
• Photos
• 3-5 sentences on why design should be nominated

You may send your entries to stephanie@tatlerphilippines.com

Submission deadline is April 7.

Here are the details of each category:

Best Architectural Concept

Moving beyond building a basic, shelter. Architecture can be an artful and creative expression that marries necessity and aesthetics. This category celebrates outstanding architectural concepts that redefine the spaces in which we live.

2023 winner: The Makiling Reserve Residence by Anthony Nazareno and Christian Guerrero

To quote Kenneth Cobonpue: “There is poetry in the simple but bold and angular silhouette of the Makiling Residence. The conscious decision not to put any artwork in the home but instead open up to nature shows itself in the interior architecture which is done elegantly and beautifully.”

Best Innovative Design

Economist and Harvard Professor Theodore Levitt once said, “Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things.” This category showcases ingenuity in design execution and champions the great ideas that have become tangible.

Budji Layug said, “The architecture is innovative because it creates a rhythm with the repetition of forms and materials. The retrained palette emphasizes the façade’s harmony.”

Sustainability is one of the most important core values of design today, as architects and designers around the globe recognize the need to create in a conscious manner. This category highlights projects that embody this movement.

2023 winner: Wooloo Bamboo Village by M+S Studio Company

Well-built and ready to stand the test of time, M+S Studio Company has achieved a feat not easy to accomplish. The look of bamboo made everything feel elevated and modern, which is not easy to do with such a common material.

With millions of pantones to choose from, colour can not only make or break a space but it alters moods and emotions. It takes sophisticated discernment to tastefully infuse colours in a design. This category is all about how colour is best used to convey a feeling and make an impact.

2023 winner: The Private Residence and Studio of Kitty Bunag

This intentional use of bright colours against dark tones in the home and neutral ones in the studio injects energy and life into the rooms.

Art is humanity’s most essential language and it is one of design’s most powerful tools to transform a space and create a mood. This category is not about having the best or most prestigious collection but how the artwork is masterfully curated and has become an integral part of a space.

2023 winner: Menarco Vertical Museum Project at the Menarco Tower

Trickie Lopa, co-founder of Art Fair Philippines, said: “This project demonstrates the many positive facets of art collecting and art appreciation. It also shows how art, when integrated into a building’s interior design, can enhance not just the aesthetic environment, but also the mental well-being of the building’s regular occupants.”

Best Living Space

Budji Layug expressed that “this design embodies the essence of tropical living, which brings together the indoor and outdoor. It feels youthful, and modern and has a casual atmosphere.”

A tastemaker has a natural flair for design and aesthetics and, by default, charmingly influences the people and spaces around them.

Her whimsical and vibrant sense of style, characterised by layered patterns, textures, and bold use of colour, is iconic and recognisable. She’s entered the realm of lifestyle and décor with her bestselling bar carts and highly successful collaboration with furniture make Philux for a collection of pieces infused with her fun, maximalist aesthetic.

In this new category, we will celebrate the best interpretation of an abstract concept for visual architecture and interior design.

The project does not need to be built and can still be in the design stages. It may also be purely conceptual and not commissioned. Entries must include the overall project idea, abstract, and description, along with supporting rendered visuals. AI-generated concepts are excluded from the category.
