Renostud.io crafts distinctive interior spaces rooted in this family’s enduring passion for travel, wildlife and history
When entrepreneurs Sean Tan and Michelle Ngiam thought about what they wanted in their dream family home, a memorable safari trip immediately sprang to mind.
A few years ago, the couple visited South Africa with one of their daughters, where they relished close encounters with wildlife and the grounding beauty of nature. That unforgettable journey became a cornerstone of their home renovation, brought to life by Jeremy Tan, founder of Renostud.io.
It also reflected the wellness philosophy of Meuraki, a wellness platform founded by Ngiam, which draws inspiration from meaningful experiences that nurture connection and well-being.

Stories of Life

To create a characterful abode, the designer took time to understand the clients’ personalities and found that, as a family of four, they were warm, adventurous, a little nostalgic and full of personality. “It was important that the space did not follow trends, but told their story in a way that felt authentic and personal,” shares the designer.
Tan, founder of Metelos Advisory, a consultancy specialising in strategy, leadership and risk management, values pragmatic, functional solutions. Meanwhile, the techpreneur Ngiam brings a focus on authenticity and balance that guided their family’s approach to designing their home.

Renostud.io analysed and made sense of the Pinterest board that Ngiam had steadily curated over the years as part of the pitch. The firm’s unique design approach sealed the deal, and Renostud.io was thus tasked to turn its clients’ vision into reality.
A Fantastic Spin

Situated within a condominium in Bukit Timah, this 1,582 sq ft apartment invites you to step into a world of wonder, peppered with a lively blend of natural elements and details that captures the adventurous spirit of the owners’ safari trip. The designer selected an elegant mix of tropical- and botanical-patterned wallcoverings, in hues that match the dark wood flooring and custom joinery in the three-bedroom apartment.

Ngiam’s interest in vintage style and colonial-era architecture has been beautifully integrated into the home, imbuing it with an old-world charm. Details such as the wall beading, Shaker-style cabinetry, herringbone tiles, grandfather clock and antique-style finishes—all meticulously planned by the designer—stand in contrast to the clean lines of modern furnishings. Faux timber beams help conceal the recessed lighting in the living room, conveying both form and functionality.

Introducing an element of the unexpected always brings a creative flourish to the work of Renostud.io, which was the case for this abode. Midway through the renovation, the couple thought of having a faux fireplace in their living room, which would capture the cosy vibe of a winter chalet within a tropical setting, and thus, the designer had to adjust the layout to make it feasible. This quickly became one of the family’s favourite fixtures, becoming a place that provides safety, respite and comfort—a physical reflection of Meuraki’s emphasis on creating spaces that support mental and emotional well-being.
Realms of Style

Each room is carefully personalised for its inhabitants, with cove ceilings and ambient lighting adding to the layered look. The couple’s bedroom is reminiscent of a plush hotel suite, featuring a handsome walk-in wardrobe generously clad in wood and an artificial skylight that helps to brighten the space.

The daughters’ bedroom features a lively menagerie design on a feature wall, and a double-decker bunk bed designed with separate areas for reading, play and slumber. The study is another room of note, continuing the abode’s tropical take on vintage style with its botanical wallcoverings, while acting as a refined space for contemplation and relaxation.
All is Well

The designer found the clients receptive to unconventional ideas and encouraged their active involvement in the process of personalising their home. Some treasure hunting was involved, as he had to source for vintage finishes and one-off pieces to create the personalised look of this apartment.
After the six-month renovation, the clients are delighted at how their home has become the embodiment of purposeful living—a reflection of the Meuraki ethos and a testament to Renostud.io’s ability to transform mixed ideas into a dream home through its thoughtful design approach.
