Cover Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari is lifestyle brand Club Med’s debut resort in South Africa that is set to open in July 2026

Scheduled to open in July 2026, Club Med’s debut property in South Africa brings together coastal relaxation and Big Five safari adventure in one all‑inclusive escape

The perennial travel conundrum is familiar to the most seasoned of globe-trotters: do you chase the thrill of an African safari or surrender to the serene shores of a beach escape? For too long, travellers have had to choose one. Now, a new option has emerged: one can enjoy both at Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari.

Scheduled to open in July 2026 amidst the unspoilt landscape of KwaZulu-Natal—a choice that reaffirms Club Med’s pioneering spirit as well as flair for exploring and establishing resorts in extraordinary places—the concept marks the brand’s debut property in South Africa. It is also the country’s first high-end all-inclusive holiday club.

In harmony with nature

Unfolding across two locations, Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari encompasses a main resort positioned within 32 hectares of nature on Dolphin Coast, known for its lush forests, picturesque coastal dunes and pristine beaches, and the Mpilo Safari Lodge, set within an 18,000‑hectare private game reserve that is 45 minutes by air or four and a half hours by road from the former. Located north of Durban, just a 30‑minute drive from King Shaka International Airport, the 411‑key main resort spans multiple structures along the aptly named Dolphin Coast, where seasonal dolphins and whales are often sighted. Developed by South African architecture firm Craft of Architecture in a collaborative process fusing local expertise with Club Med sensibility, the resort reflects thoughtful architectural integration with the surrounding landscape, emphasising seamless indoor-outdoor living through contemporary architecture featuring locally sourced stone, light wood and clean lines.

Expansive windows that frame the coastal environment whilst highlighting indigenous flora are a common feature across the 345 rooms (310 Superior, 35 Deluxe) and 66 suites in the Ilanga section, an Exclusive Collection space that proposes a more intimate experience with personalised service, a dedicated lounge and more. The resort is also built around terraces that open into tropical gardens and four pools—a main one at the heart of the compound, one for adults only, a family pool and an exclusive one within the Ilanga section.

The interior design, meanwhile, is a joint effort by local studio Mobius and Parisian firm Studio MHNA. Bringing together contemporary beach resort aesthetics and subtle Zulu cultural influences, the private and communal areas incorporate graphic motifs, handwoven fabrics and natural materials.

Safari excellence

While still rooted in nature, the experience at Mpilo Safari Lodge is more of excitement than relaxation; grounded in the thrill of an authentic safari adventure. Nestled within one of KwaZulu-Natal’s largest private reserves that is notable for hosting Africa’s “big five” animals (the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant and Cape buffalo), it is a launching pad to immersive wildlife encounters in Zululand’s distinctive landscape characterised by rolling, verdant savannah. Daily guided safaris led by experienced rangers ensure optimal wildlife‑viewing opportunities, whilst special family safaris accommodate guests with small children. The lodge’s 75 premium tents provide Club Med’s signature comfort standards, complete with panoramic views, an adult lounge area with a pool, a restaurant, and a supervised children’s zone with water games and family‑friendly play areas.

This safari component operates as an à la carte experience outside Club Med’s standard all‑inclusive package, requiring a minimum stay of five nights at the main resort for participation—an arrangement that ensures adequate time for meaningful wildlife encounters.

Outdoor living elevated

The resort’s recreational programme reflects Club Med’s philosophy of spots and outdoor activities as lifestyle experiences. Notable offerings include the first surf school for Club Med globally, with daily lessons open not just to adults but also children aged six and above, and guided gravel bike tours that traverse diverse terrain, from sugar cane fields to coastal paths with ocean vistas. There are also padel courts, flying trapeze installations, and a wellness centre with a spa, hammam facilities and thatched‑roof palapas.

Various clubs and programmes ensure enjoyment across the board. Baby Club Med, for instance, is dedicated to children aged four to 23 months, while the Amazing Family! programme caters for intergenerational experiences.

And to satisfy the palate: Oceana, offering globally inspired cuisine, and Nguni Gourmet Club, featuring South African seafood and local produce. The beverage programme extends from Injabulo, the resort’s main bar that will also house a coffee shop, to the ocean‑facing Dunes Beach Bar, where cocktails are served in relaxed surroundings inspired by South African shores.

Built with care

This new chapter for Club Med is one written with sustainability in mind. Built on a former sugar cane plantation, the resort is designed with solar car parks, natural ventilation and water‑saving systems, and will seek Green Globe certification as well as a 4‑star Green Star rating. It will also implement from the get‑go the “Bye‑Bye Plastics” programme, Club Med’s signature drive to eliminate single‑use plastics at all its resorts.

The impact is social too. Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari is expected to create more than 800 direct jobs and 1,500 indirect jobs. It has also joined hands with NukaKamma Talent Development Centre to offer world‑class hospitality training and career opportunities to disadvantaged local youth.

A new chapter

Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari marks a bold step for the brand: a place where two iconic landscapes—ocean and savannah—can be enjoyed within one all‑inclusive experience. Here, guests can transition naturally between the meditative rhythm of coastal life and the heightened awareness that wildlife encounters inspire.

With bookings starting this October, the countdown to experiencing a different kind of African journey has begun. For those who value authentic discovery over familiar comfort, this is an invitation to explore a new chapter in luxury travel.
