This penthouse by K2SD Group was inspired by a concept poem that set the emotional tone for its design

“Black frames the calm with classic lines, a whisper of colour where timeless shines. Textures and patterns speak in hushed embrace, expanding walls for home to trace.” The evocative words of this quatrain, penned by K2SD Group founder Kelly K. Cheah, would establish the aesthetic foundation for this stylish two-level penthouse in the Hallmark Residences condominium in Singapore’s District 10. Using poetry as the bedrock for a design scheme is a unique approach, and one that Cheah regularly employs when embarking on any new project.

This assignment marked the second project K2SD Group had undertaken for the client, who lives in the four-bedroom penthouse with her son and daughter. Cheah sought to repay the client’s trust and the creative freedom she afforded the design firm by conceptualising a space that genuinely reflects her vision and lifestyle. The makeover kicked off in September 2025, and was completed in May 2026.

Cheah reveals that K2SD were tasked to fashion a refined, classic home within a given budget. The onus lay on the team to decide on the materials, finishes and detailing to achieve a luxurious look without breaking the bank.

The impressive foyer defines the overall ambience of the 3,000 sq ft abode: timeless and infinitely elegant. A black metal frame clads the entryway to the home, forming a vestibule that acts as a striking visual anchor and standout design element. Two plush stools in a textural cream-and-caramel finish temper the rigid angles here and provide practical seating while putting on or removing footwear.

Throughout the home, black lines across the wall panelling and tiles, and sleek black fittings set against the pale base palette present a classic design dichotomy that grabs the eye. “The lines and colours were carefully selected to create continuity and a cohesive visual flow,” explains Cheah.

Materials were specifically picked to augment the apartment’s sense of elegance through texture, mood, and colour. The expansive living room incorporates a plush sofa and a furry rug, with patterned cushions lending tactility. An elongated console in white-veined black marble stands below the TV, grounding the space with its commanding form. Nearby, the dining hall features a fluffy wall hanging that imbues the space with tactility and warmth.

In the son’s room, wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries achieves a balance of old-world charm with a youthful character. “The same brand was chosen for the daughter’s room, but with a softer design to evoke a more calming atmosphere,” says Cheah.

Subtle applications of colour, such as a blush-pink headboard also in the daughter’s bedroom and a teal washbasin in the attic bathroom, provide an energising lift to the neutral scheme and help to offset the black fittings.

Areas such as the master bedroom, ensuite bathroom and attic extend the design language of the common zones. In the former, a black frame mirrors the fixture in the entryway and gives the four-poster bed a sleek, contemporary feel. A bench at the foot of the bed offers a visually pleasing contrast with its more traditional curves, while circular wall sconces and an asymmetrical floral arrangement with unstructured, overflowing blooms lend an organic touch.

The master bathroom is a haven of calm. In a bold move, the bathtub is positioned against a skylight backdrop, flooding the space with natural light, while Ziptrak blinds offer privacy whenever it’s needed.

One can bask in the spirit of the roaring twenties in the attic, a celebration of art deco elements in all their glory. Black-and-white floor tiles set in a bold geometric arrangement create a powerful impression, complemented by the black-and-white striped blinds. Black-framed, white-upholstered furnishings embody a classic vibe, while potted plants offer a burst of freshness and vitality.

Cheah voices her satisfaction at ultimately creating a “timeless, sophisticated home that delivers a high-end look while remaining cost-effective, through thoughtful design decisions, strategic material choices, and attention to proportions and craftsmanship”.
